Worst case possible. It sounds like he's in a vegetative state which could go on for years. The most we can pray for now is that it ends soon for not only his sake but his family's. Now that more facts have been released, buried for 20 minutes, 50 minutes of resuscitation was too long. Here in the US they stop much soon that that, so the question is, do they usually do this in Austria or was it because he was a Prince? It has left the family especially his daughters in a horrible emotional state. I'm so sad for the family.

You would have to have a heart of stone not to feel for the family.I would hate to be in  Mabel's shoes,how the hell could you explain this to there two little girls.The seem like a very close family so hopeful they can draw strength for each other.

Awful news. My heart goes for Beatrix, Mabel, their daughters and the whole DRF. I was hoping he'll be okay somehow, miracles do happen. Sadly this is not the case. He can be in vegetative state for years...

Some of this we already know but there are some new details mixed in.

"INNSBRUCK - Dutch Prince Johan Friso, the second son of Queen Beatrix, might never regain consciousness following a serious avalanche accident in Austria, his doctors announced Friday.

"It can't be said with certainty at this point whether Prince Friso will ever regain consciousness again," Wolfgang Koller, head of the trauma unit at Innsbruck University Hospital, told a press conference.

"In any case, a neurological rehabilitation will be required that will take months, if not years."

The 43-year-old Dutch royal was caught in an avalanche while skiing offpiste with a friend in the posh Austrian ski resort of Lech a week ago.

He was quickly evacuated by helicopter to Innsbruck University Hospital but nevertheless spent some 20 minutes under the snow, according to various reports.

"Due to the amount of time spent under the snow, his brain was not supplied with sufficient oxygen," Koller, who did not take any questions, told journalists Friday.

"This resulted in a heart attack that lasted about 50 minutes. During this whole time, the patient had to be reanimated.

"Fifty minutes of reanimation is very, very long, one might even say too long.

"Our hope was that the patient's mild hypothermia would provide some protection for the brain. This hope was not realized."

Doctors were able to do an MRI scan on the prince for the first time on Thursday and "it's clear that the lack of oxygen caused massive damage in the patient's brain," Koller said.

"The family of Prince Friso will now look for an appropriate facility for the rehabilitation," he added.

These were the first official details given on the prince's health since his accident last Friday."

  these are terrible news, as everyone has already said, it's certainly the worst kind of torture for this poor family. My heart goes out for his mother, wife and daughters and all the others. This is just awful 

I completely agree Hibou, this doesn't seem as a decision taken for the sake of the patient. If he wakes up I'll regret my words probably, but this is the worst situation possible for his family. Now they may have to decide over his life, and that is so awful

I wonder what other injuries he sustained?  Of course the brain injuries are most crucial but it brought something up to me that seems a bit backwards.  I have a friend whose first-born was full-term but the cord got wrapped around his neck and he was without oxygen for many hours before the doctors were able to deliver him.  He suffered profound brain damage and has pretty severe cerebral palsy.  He's now 5 years old and still severely disabled but they never gave up on him, as you wouldn't with a child.  It seems that we're way too quick to give up on an adult who may suffer brain injuries like this.  If I was his family, I would want to do all I could to see if he can make it.

By the same token another friend had a cousin who went skiing in Austria with her Austrian boyfriend and she had an accident and was in a coma for six weeks before her parents could make it over there and they had to pull the plug in the end.  It could go either way.  Very sad for his family, it will be a long hard road.

From the start it was not a good scenario.  We know the info the public receives is never reality.  Even 15 min under snow and need for resuscitation is not conducive to full recovery.  No positive response  or news from early days was a vEry bad sign as well.  The only hope frisk had was body temp and as the doctor revealed it was not enough to slow the metabolic needs

Brain without O2 to this extent is not something someone recovers from fully

Very sad indeed to make the decision to end life, but this is why everyone should have an advanced directive.  You never know what will happen. Best to have the conversation with loved ones when competent to make decisions.

Well, there is very very very little hope he will ever awaken from his coma. He has massive brain damage.

And about 'pulling the plug': since the family wants to take him to a rehabilitation centre, it's clear which decision they took. I doubt they even want to think about it.

I don't think that this is the place to discuss euthanasie - definitely not - but PLEASE don't let somebody starve.

My fiancé had a terrific accident with major brain damage. He was in induced coma for over a week - but did not really wake up afterwards. Nevertheless his relatives and I had often the feeling, that he was hearing us, that he understood us - but there was no proof. The doctor's did believe us and so they sent him to rehabilitation institutions for several times (by the way also to Innsbruck and Hochzirl - two highly specialised and qualified places).
But after a year there still was nearly no development and he had to leave the hospital. His mother, a very strong and lovely woman, found a way to take him home - and after a few weeks at home he started to react to us visibly. He made sounds (e.g. if somebody made a joke) and started with little movements of his hands. You could also say: he then gradually woke up from his coma - but it took years, and years, and years - and still is heavily handicaped.

I don't want to bore you with my very own story - after all this is a place to talk about royals.
But my point is - that even when people in coma lost their ability to communicate with us - they still have their feelings and personality.
Even if these days are the most dreadful ones for Mabel and Beatrice ... it may be that they are still in connection with Friso.
I really feel with them and hope that they find a good way to coop with the change of life they now have to face.

I am sorry for your fiance, but each case is different. With Terri Schiavo, her brain was basically mush and had lost half of its mass. Every area of it was damaged, and the damage was irreversible. She was not going to recover. It may, unfortunately, be the same case with Friso.
