I've just been reading the website for the Norwegian Republican movement.

There was a section on Sweden which said that after the birth of the new baby the Swedish press were more balanced in their opinions on the royal family and allowed more republican views to be heard than usual.

They claim this has helped to increase membership for the republican movement - something that was an unexpected byproduct of the media coverage of the birth.

Does anyone know if this is true?

It also claims that support for the monarchy has fallen to 66% and is continuing to decline.

Not that I remember. There were some editorials about how Estelle should have the right to choose her own career, but not more than normal.

I haven't seen numbers but it's probably true. When Victoria and Daniel got engaged, hundreds of people joined both the royalist and republican associations.

56%. It's been falling since the 1990s - see this thread Smiley

It would be interesting to see where the numbers are when CP announces his engagement.   Thinking

An engagement between CP and Sophia will make the downhill steeper for sure.

The royal family is in a delicate position. King CG opened the door to accept marriage with commoners when he married Silvia Sommerlath (and actually thanks to her the royal family gained popularity again…). Therefor he can't really deny his childrens' partners a titel.
Today when people more and more are questioning the existens of a monarchy for just PR and historical reasons it would give rather weired signals if CP and/or M gave up the titel - for any reason (even if they really should consider it regarding the amount of "work" they put into it). Why should we keep a monarchy if not even the royals want to be royal? Or "qualify" to be royal (if for example CG demands that CP and/or M loose the titel - which I doubt he will)?
CG might temporarilly get away with giving Chris and Sophia some duke/dutchess title and keep the prince/princess titels to Victoria and her kids - with the argument of not ending up with too many princes and princesses in a few years when CP and M start breeding. Still, that would go against the fact that Lilian became princess (although they married before CG and Silvia had ”produced a heir”).
There really is no ”right way”, either way I do believe we’re on the path to become a republic. I honestly wouldn’t mind!

...I hope I'm making some kind of sense, sorting my thoughts into written words  Smiley Not sure if this is the right thread for this either, but I figured that one with the words ”Monarchy” and ”Crisis” would fit quite will…

In the case of Lilian, they could say it´s to honor her.  Cool But on the other side it was unfair to strip off the HRH from the Kings sisters, so yeah it´s a hubbub
And welcome Ms K Star Smiley

Thank you! Nice to be here  Smiley I've been enjoying reading RD for several months now and been posting silently in my head. Figured I might as well put the posts on the board occasionally Wink

Lilian sure earned her princess title...  Yes

I remember a comment in a documentary about the Scandinavian Royal families many years ago regarding marrying commoners. Acting more like ordinary people and not leading a too alienated life, with private schools and arranged marriages, was more or less necessary to keep popularity. But that would also mean that they loose that special glory of mystique, since "anyone" can be a royal. After a couple of generations of Mette Marits and Daniels entering the family the glory will have faded too much. (Adding a Sophia H too, we might not even need to put ”generation” in plural…  Nerves)
I’m not saying I want the ”mystique” back and of course the royals should marry out of love. They’re just facing a ”moment 22” (catch 22?). I just hope (and I’m pretty sure) they have a plan B for the future…
