Is it just the Danes' bowing and scraping that should be stopped, or does that include everyone...the Brits, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegians, etc.?  I agree that it does seem a little out-dated, but I think it would be better if the practice were shelved for everyone.  I can't imagine QEII would be all that upset if dipping one's knees and neck were put on the no no list.
Curtseying isn't a requirement in the UK. My sister attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace and she didn't have to curtsey to QEII.

Interesting.  Thanks, Little star.  Then is curtseying a requirement in other countries or is it up to the individual, as in the UK?  If it's not a requirement I don't see how we can get upset with JC, Marge, QEII, and company for accepting curtseys and bows from their minions.  After all, what would we have them do?  Pull the curtseyer to her feet by her shoulders while saying, "No, no,...please....not for little 'ole me!"

It was a few years ago now but I think my sister received a protocol list of dos and don'ts, which made it clear what a person was to do. F&M issued one when they went to the US on their last useless trip. I seem to remember there were a couple of unusual demands  Whistle

Thanks, Little_Star.

I just think it's good manners. I hold the door open for others, offer my arm when necessary etc. It's just being polite. IMO.

In my mind, I tried to reverse the roles and let Marie do this to Jokke. It was hard to watch.  Wink

You're welcome to photograph them, but they are not to be touched.   Dead

It's asked that no one present themselves to the Crown Prince Couple unless they are formally introduced.   Dead

If you are introduced you may shake their hand and bow (men) or curtsy (women).    Dead

If you have the opportunity to speak with them (it's not likely, but just in case!), they are to be individually addressed as "Your Royal Highness."   Dead

Please do not photograph them eating.   Dead

Jokke is old school gentleman he opens the door for Marie, love that!!

Notice how Mary put her hand on Fred's arm but the space between their bodies is very telling!!

I know some women like that, but it is a turn off for me. It is easy for me to get in and out of cars, it is totally easy to open doors, and I don´t need some man to take control over so simple things in my life! I am not handicapped because I am a woman!!!

I had the same philosophy until I gave birth to beautiful daughter to dear husband. After 2 days of of the most horrible contractions and c -section I deserved to be treated as queen for the rest of mi life. And poor the guy who tries to court Princess Winx, he will have to face a very determined Mr Winx making sure his princess is treated as queen as well!!

LOL - what you say is cute.  Star Of course everybody needs a hand sometimes!
But personally I still want to open my own doors and step out of cars on my own, thank you very much! If a man did this to me, I would swat him away, mind your own steps, mister! And no, I am NOT a masculine woman!

I am very much a feminist and I had the same thoughts about car doors, etc, until I met my husband.  He's an only child and his father worked very long hours.  He was pretty much raised by only his mother.  She was a miracle-worker, because she taught him from a very early age to open doors, hold purses, hold a coat for a lady who is going to put it on, etc.  This makes me very proud, so I have no problem when he does these things for me, or my mother, or his mother.  It shows a sign of respect for women, which I absolutely love

I love seeing this behavior in men and boys too. They don't have to do any of it anymore, but when they do, they really stand out. The extra attention and courtesy paid to females (or to elderly who need assistance) harkens back to an era of greater civility, manners, and chivalry. Nothing wrong with that. When my family gathers, I remind my brother or nephews to help their grandmothers down the stairs, etc. They don't mind doing it at all, but they need to be reminded sometimes because the social rules aren't so clear anymore.

Well said, Pocahontas.Star  I'm into "greater civility, manners, and chivalry."  Hip, hip hooray for all you Moms, Dads, teachers, etc. that are instilling those qualities and virtues into future generations.

I think everybody should behave politely towards each other and especially that younger people should help older people out and that non-pregger people should help pregnant people and so on. But otherwise I agree with Abs, to much opening of car doors and protective hand holding gives me a sense of women being the weaker sex.
