The bowing and curtseying makes me sick.. when will the stop with that old fashion thing?

Is it just the Danes' bowing and scraping that should be stopped, or does that include everyone...the Brits, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegians, etc.?  I agree that it does seem a little out-dated, but I think it would be better if the practice were shelved for everyone.

Yes, it should be shelved for everyone.

I don't believe that curtseying is expected in the Netherlands.  I'm not sure about the other families.  I definitely see too much of it in DK and in the UK.
I agree that the NL has dropped the custom but I have seen Maxima curtsey when she is at a foreign royal event ie: Thai King's jubilee. I typically see the British, Danish,Norwegian and Spanish royal family members bowing and curtseying. The saddest was when a heavily pregnant Letizia greeted JC with a curtsey at Erica's funeral.

Ugh Crap  I'm sorry, but people should definitely not be expected to curtsey/bow when royals show up to their family member's funeral.  QEII did the right thing at Churchill's funeral.  A funeral is to honor the life of the deceased, not to bow and scrape to royals Nono  Marge should have done what QEII did; of course, we all know that Marge does not have her head grounded in reality, nor does she have common sense.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised   I think it is vile and foolish of these royals to expect people to bow/curtsey to them in today's world.  Just another example of how monarchy is out of touch and out of date.

I find it amusing that the DRF are lauded by Danish and some other European media as the modern down to earth royal family that others she emualate. They use the example of Daisy et famille shopping in France amongst the "common" people not being bothered. The truth is that no one knows who they are so that is why they fit in. By when in Denmark it is a different story, they expect to be bowed to.

What's up with all the grinning? Is this a social event? and holding up funerals is just rude. Thumb down

I don't remember seeing other royals smiling and grinning this much at funerals.

They may be royal by birth (and, in Mary's case, sheer luck and cunning) but they are bottom feeders.

Grinning at a funeral.  Turning up late to a funeral.  Frodo's strange sobbing.  Urgh, Denmark, you deserve better.

Does anybody know if Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller adhered to or insisted on protocol regarding his knighthood in the Order of the Elephant?  He was entitled to be called "Your Excellency" (according to the Telegraph UK).  Apparently, the award is rarely given to "commoners", and in recent years he was the only member of the Order who was not a royal or head of state.

One of the King Louis of France received the Order of the Elephant.  His little elephant was, unusually, not returned to Denmark upon his death.  A photo of the elephant is on the Louvre museum website.

I learned something - Maersk is a Danish business!!

Personally I prefer Derf´s emotion to Marge´s utter indifference. She could as well have been going to a party. So strange!

iTA that the curtseying and bowing is old fashioned but no more old fashioned than the concept of monarchy itself.

Perhaps Maersk  was a grandfather figure to Fred.  I think Fred has been short in the male role model department.  Also every funeral I have been to reminds me of other ones.  Maybe that is what is happening to Frederik.  He was very close to his grandmother, he remembers how close she was to Maersk and all of this converged into an emotional day for him.  At least he was more appropriate at the funeral than his hyena grinning mother ( she must be Waity's role model).

ITA  Thumb up it is old fashioned and quaint, amusing to watch from afar......relevant in the real world  No
protocol dictates the queen enters last.....period. that's why there was such tittering when the non dynamic duo entered AFTER QEII  at one of the royal wedding celebrations.

i don't understand the laughing and smiling, like it's a public facade function. who were the women in the front? his wife, children etc, they were kinda yucking it up too. the videos wouldn't load  Sad  but mares and fred seem to show real emotion in most the the pics, video's are so much better,  without knowing the occasion i would have never known it was a funeral JMO

silly to us real world people, very serious to those living in  the last of an age that (if we're honest) ended in the last century.  i'm no republican, i love the pomp, parades, carriages and tiaras but sadly the more i see, the less i understand their purpose and contributions.  i'm conflicted, i like to "watch" the fairy tale, but i'm not sure i'd like any of them for my next door neighbor.......that might be a good thread  Wink

Fred has his pale, febrile "post much heavy partying" look.

I notice the Moller family women are wearing appropriately low heels as befits a protestant funeral.

I didn't see what Mary had on her feet - f***-me stillet shoes as usual? How inappropriate if so!

Curtseying isn't a requirement in the UK. My sister attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace and she didn't have to curtsey to QEII.

We drove past Holmens Kirke at four o´clock yesterday. We had to go in that direction - and boy, was that stupid. Had forgotten all about the funeral. Traffic jams galore, but we got to see all the rich mourners in black filling the streets. Some were waiting at a bus stop in their black attires. It looked out of place, but perhaps they aren´t all that rich. Didn´t see the royals though, I think they had already left.
