Aaaaaaand...yet another PARTY to add to her long list of galas, parties and premieres! Such a hard worker is our Waity! And poor wittle baby has to attend the party all on her own since Willy will be working. My heart just bleeds for her!! http://www.dailymail.co.u...e-garden-party-month.htmlThe Duchess of Cambridge is to notch up another major royal first when she attends a garden party at Buckingham Palace later this month. Considered to be one of the highlights of the summer season, all eyes will be on Kate as she joins the Queen to take tea with 8,000 guests in the gardens of the royal residence, Mail Online can exclusively reveal. Unfortunately the Duchess will have to carry out the engagement on her own as her husband, Prince William, cannot get time off from work at RAF Valley on Anglesey where he is a Search and Rescue pilot. Oh how fun would it be if one of our British Dishies could crash the party!! I would love to hear first hand experience from someone who tried to have a casual conversation with Kate. She doesn't appear to be much of a one-on-one people person and doesn't seem be comfortable at those types of events, example the Scout outing.

That would be SO awesome - is it open to the public? All I could figure out from article is that there is the portion for the normal masses - or "greedy guests" as the author called them...you know, the actual people who support the luxurious lifestyle of the monarchy! - and then the royals leave to go and mingle with their peeps, the VIPs.

Approximately 8,000 guests attend each garden party. People from all walks of life are invited on the recommendation of a large number of national organisations who submit lists on a pre-arranged quota. For example, the government, Lord-Lieutenants and organisations such as the Civil Service, Armed Services, Diplomatic Corps, charities and societies, all have quotas for nominations. This ensures that a representative cross-section of the community is invited and that guests are generally people who have contributed a large amount to their various organisations or society.
Garden party invitations are sent out by the Lord Chamberlain' s Office in the Lord Chamberlain's name on behalf of The Queen. All the arrangements are planned by the Lord Chamberlain's Office.
http://www.royal.gov.uk/R...denParties/TheGuests.aspxI've always wanted to attend one of these garden parties although there looks to be a lot of standing around while waiting for the Royals to make it to your section. Still, what a lovely excuse to dress up and meet the Queen!

Still, what a lovely excuse to dress up and meet the Queen! My next door neighbour’s went as members of the Prison Service and said it was actually quite dull (and a bloody expensive day as the outfit she wore cost her a fortune, as did the hat!), after all the initial excitement of being in the gardens of Buckingham Palace and in the presence of the Queen. They met the Wessex’s but not the Queen, as she did not walk their way. Big woop, Kate is going to a Garden Party. All the royals attend them, she hardly has to do much! All she has to do is walk down some steps after hearing the anthem, then walk down a pathway as she is instructed to do so and meet people, and she is already told what their name is and what they do. I suppose, however, making conversation may be difficult for her and the first two things she may ask (name and job) are already done for her! Poor mite.

A traditional BP garden party is not exactly a cool, swanky gala. It's basically a reception. If Kate was so obsessed with posh galas, she'd have gone to the ARK Gala which was held yesterday. She and William went last year, but not this year.
I've actually heard good report of people who have gone to a garden party at BP or Holyroodhouse. Guests are given free reign over the BP gardens and even public rooms of the palace. One of the army bands plays during the whole thing. The guests get to have tea and some nice snacks in a beautiful setting. Most Brits like nothing better. Getting to meet a royal would be the cherry on the cake I suppose.
Apparently guests each eat 14 sandwiches/cakes/desserts at these things, thinking if you're only gonna be there once you might as well make the most of it. It must cost an absolute arm and a leg.

Thanks Molly for outlining your friend's experiences. It's always good to get first hand experiences of how people see the day.

It's still a party.

They met the Wessex’s but not the Queen, as she did not walk their way. My sister went to one a few years ago and she really enjoyed herself. However, after she'd forked out for a new hat, dress etc it was rather expensive. Although she said the cakes at BP were the best she had ever tasted.

Lemme get this straight: Prince William can get as much time off as he wants to go on holiday ... but can't get a day off to go to an event where he would be in touch with 8,000 citizens in one go?
Crap!

And yet if he took the time off, it would be all about how he shirked duty to attend another party. Kind of lose lose situation for him. I have no problem with him missing events, for work. Waity Katy on the other hand.

Waity Katy on the other hand. I think the point Hester was making was that he can get plenty of time off for HOLIDAYS but can't get a day off to attend the Garden Party. Which would suggest that his priorities are a little.... interesting.
