It is fairly unusual in the UK in any woman under 60 - I knew of one who would be mid 30s now (she was named after her gran) - only younger one I have met. In the 60's at school they were all Catherines, Susans, Christines, Elizabeths and Janes.

I like the traditional names coming back. And not a school full of what ever the trendy name for those years were.
I bet if we looked at middle names, you'd find a lot of these names used more often than we think. We don't know most people's middle names unless we ask. It was tradition in places like the south, to use your grandmother's maiden name, in your child's name.

(BTW, the first wife of Alfonso XIII, the guy in my avatar, was also a Spanish princess named Mercedes)
Oops, he is Alfonso XII.

Oops, he is Alfonso XII. Alfonso XIII is JC's grandfather, and was married only once to Victoria Eugenie (a granddaughter of queen victoria by her daughter Beatrice)

And it was he who was married to Maria de las Mercedes, his first cousin.

Yes, I was simply replying that I had been confused, when Clara tried to add the wife of Alfonso XIII to my list of Mercedes in the Spanish Royal family. Alfonson XII's first wife and daughter were on my list. I thought perhaps I was wrong, that Alfronso XIII was JC's grandfather, seeing that Clara was talking about her own avatar, so maybe I had my numbers wrong. It seems I didn't.
