I'm neither Arab nor Israeli, but as an American I believe in TRUTH. Historical facts are vital in understanding the situation of the Middle East and I will take the time to lay them out for the RDishers who are interested:
The term Philistine Syria (eventually shortened to the Greek, "Palaistinei") was first used by Herodotus in the 5th c BC. Later, in the 2nd century AD, it was used by the Romans as a generic term to designate a province (there were in fact 3 Roman Palestines).
The term was re-employed by Napoleon and also adopted by the Ottoman Turks. Finally, the British re-used it when they established the British Mandate of Palestine in the 20th Century. Palestine ceased to exist in 1948 with the creation of the modern State of Israel.
IPSO FACTO, PALESTINE DOES NOT EXIST.
That said, the Palestinian National Authority (aka Palestinian Authority) is the governmental entity that rules the West Bank. It is a product of the PLO/Fatah, which is a secular nationalist party that evolved from the former terrorist group. The West Bank (of the Jordan River) is occupied territory legally won by the Israelis in 1967. The West Bank comprises Judea and Samaria. which historically were provinces of Israel. The Gaza Strip was under the Palestinian National Authority until the Islamist terror group Hamas assumed military control of Gaza, killing or evicting members of Fatah. Today, so-called Palestinians are ruled by the PNA/PA (which is secular) and Hamas (which is Islamist). The PNA seeks an independent Palestinian state and Hamas seeks an Islamic state occupying all of the territory of Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.
One last item that I found useful in understanding the dynamics in the Middle East:
According to Judeo-Christian ethics lying is a sin. However, in Islamic jurisprudence and theology (i.e. Sharia), the use of "taqiyya" (translation: precautionary dissimulation or deception and keeping one's convictions secret) and "kitman" (translation: mental reservation and dissimulation or concealment of malevolent intentions) against the "Infidels" (i.e. people of other faiths) is regarded as a virtue and a religious duty.
