I was shocked by the story in the margaret rhodes book about the servant (was it the cowman?) who died during a dinner party and they all thought it was hysterically funny?  And she said if the QM had been there she'd have thought it was hilarious as well.
what were they on?

Yes the cowman died and the message came after the first course of the dinner party to ask if Dennis (Rhodes) could go and check  if he really had died - he decided to send the gardener to check instead. The gardener came back and said he had but they still needed Dennis to help lay him out....

In 1767 John Lyon, 9th Earl of Strathmore, married Mary Eleanor Bowes. The family name was changed to Bowes by Act of Parliament.   
The 10th Earl, John, changed the name to Lyon-Bowes. The 13th Earl, Claude, changed the Lyon-Bowes surname to Bowes-Lyon.
