Isn't this the same one?  This is from her honeymoon.

According to http://www.dianasjewels.net/pearlnecklaces.htm this pearl choker was a present from the Spencer Family to Diana on her 18th birthday.

They quote from The Queen's Jewels p.99, Leslie Field, 1987

"...It consisted of three rows with a turquoise and pearl cluster clasp, the clasp showing when it matched the colour of her outfit, hidden at the back when it did not.  She has now altered the clasp to be all pearls..."

Don't want to go off topic but I seem to remember reading that all the Spencer girls had pearl chokers.

Yes, I also read somewhere she no longer liked the turquoise clasp.  I've tried/am trying to organize all my press photos and clippings of Diana and they are organized enough for the purposes of looking for this.  So she wore the choker pretty frequently in 1982 and 1983 and then hardly at all in 1984.  The only time I have a photo of her wearing it that year was on February 8 at the London Ritz at a party to unveil a new portrait of Charles.  It still has the turquoise clasp.  She was wearing a black velvet dress with polka dots.  Color pictures of that evening can be found in many of the Trevor Hall books.  Anyway the next time she wears the choker, or at least I'm pretty sure, is in Italy on April 28, 1985.  She is wearing a burgundy silk stripe suit with matching hat, the clasp is now all pearls.

I have a theory.  Around late 1984/early 1985 Diana brought her sapphire brooch from the Queen Mother to the jewelers- I think it was Garrards but I'm not sure, to be turned into the centerpiece of a pearl necklace (which was to become one of her most famous pieces) that she debuted at her brother's 21st birthday party on May 20.  Perhaps no longer fond of the turquoise Diana brought her old choker along to be adjusted when she had her new one commissioned.

If anyone has anymore information I'd be really interested to hear it.  I hope this helps Lille.  I'm guessing 1990 would be the absolute latest she would have worn it.  The latest picture I remember seeing her wear it in is from 1988.

Does anyone know if this was a wedding present or did she own the choker coming into the marriage?

Star Thank you so much for trying to help. I can't find picures of the choker after 1988 either. In the 90s it seems she more or less only wore chokers with evening wear. There was a lot of chokers with day wear in the 80's. However, I have found a pearl choker from the 90s which we did not see in the 80s. It resembles her birthday choker but it is clearly not the same.

That one looks to have a sapphire in the center. It does appear to be more "grown up" Could have been a gift from Charles or someone at some point. Both look lovely.

Her Cartier watch was from her father, very timeless looking, I believe William has it.

Wonder if he gave the watch back, though, when he took the Ring for himself...? After all, William did choose the watch, yes, but it was Harry who selected his Mother's ring. It would only be fair if William traded the watch to Harry, otherwise William (sodding, spoiled brat that he is) ended up with both.

Which cartier watch? the one in the honeymoon photo. TBH William kept the watch, though it might be in the safe. seems he is not allowed in there anymore.....until after Harry weds.  Whistle

The last time she wore the choker, at least that I have found in my collection was on May 30, 1990 at the Presentation of the New Colours to the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards.  I found a picture so you could see on pinterest.  I hope the link works.

When I was going through my photos I found a new choker that I first noticed her wear at the Opening of Parliament in 1991.  She may have worn it earlier as I didn't go back and check but I was wondering if anyone new anything about this piece.  I don't remember seeing it in any of my 80s photographs.  Here are some photos I found of the day on Pinterest.

I find it fascinating that Diana had so few jewels considering her status. Would someone be kind enough to tell us some history on her signiture  piece, the sapphire choker? The more I look at it the more blue it gets. It seems like a very high quality piece. Was it her personal jewels? Thanks

I read a bio of hers long ago and my understanding was she had a signet ring and her 'D' necklace that her friends had given her going into the marriage. Of course the Spencer tiara was hers to borrow. Any jewelry in the family would be at the disposal of the Countess Spencer. The whole estate went to Charles.

She also had a gold Cartier watch and pearl chocker. If not more.

I love sapphires and that is one of my favorite's    Gorgeous!

It is reported that the large sapphire, with the double halo of diamonds was a wedding gift from Elizabeth the Queen mother.

Diana wore it as a brooch only a couple of times. Here she is in 1982, using the brooch to hold the sash of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown which was gifted from Queen Beatrix.

The brooch disappeared only to return a few years later set with the seven strands of pearls.  This is November 1985, at a White House dinner when she danced with John Travolta.

I believe you are right.   Yes   I too think she had more jewelry than we know.   Also, because she had some favorite pieces that she wore often we tend to think of those and not the less familiar/worn pieces.

Think about the Queen's jewel collection! She usually wears her signature pieces.

I just know I wculd lose a several hours ooohing and aahing  (and inwardly  Drool ) in her majesty's jewel vault.

We can't forget about Diana's aquamarines.  Not a great photo but still eludes to the beauty of the aquamarines.
