1961: Princess Astrid marries Johan Martin Ferner

Astrid's wedding gown is beautiful. I love the lace detail on the skirt.

Astrid is the one with the always sunny disposition. I love the photos I've seen of her wearing that silly tiara that looks like she's receiving messages from deep space, or is going to take wing and start pollinating flowers. If I had to sit through a long boring state banquet, I think it would be fun to have Aunty Astrid at my side.

I remember seeing photos of Haakon when he was attending the University of California.  He was NOT anything to write home about. He had to grow into his looks, I guess. I don't think he had a lot of fun while he was in California because he had all these weekend engagements hither and yon to attend various lutefisk suppers and judge little old Norwegian-American ladies' rosemaling competitions. He didn't really come into his own until he returned to Norway, met Mette-Marit and stood up to his parents about her.

Are you sure about that? He was pretty bold going to Berkeley and not sticking to the East Coast Universities. And he was accepted based on academic standing also; he had to submit exam scores, unlike EC schools where wow you're royal, or super rich: in-
That a was pretty bold move going there
ETA he had plans to go to SAIS his last semester at Berkeley, but then MM happened...

Yes, he was bold to make that choice. But from what I heard, her pretty much had his head down and studied hard. And did a lot of representation of the Norwegian Royal Family at various events.

Good for him. The NRF seem disciplined about their work generally, except MM

With respect to Marius' and Sverre Magnus' beautiful hair,  I read somewhere that with increasingly multicultural societies and the penchant toward marrying outside one's ethnic group, that the gene for blond hair will, in a couple of generations, be much less prevalent.

I remember the first time I flew into Norway  and saw the sea people with of blond hair walking through Oslo's Gardermoen airport. Never before been around so many blonds in my life.  (And it was the polar opposite of the experience I had in Tokyo's Shinjuku station one time when I was heading out of Tokyo as the rush of morning commuters was coming in -- an ocean of shining black hair I thought would swallow me up.

I agree.

I'm not usually into beards/facial hair on men, but Haakon's really suits him and he is indeed much yummier with it. He is an exception to my usual rule.

Also, agreeing with what someone said upthread. He grew into his looks, and continues to get finer with age.

And here I am, making yet another post on Hotkons Hotness.
