if only economists had found the universal panacea to economic crises... maxima is an "economist" like zillions others before and after her, many of them being much more qualified than her.

Economist is a job description just as diplomat, fits everybody and their Aunt Bessie, and has a nice sophisticated ring to it...

In that case, everything they do can be considered condescending imo. Like Stéphanie and Caroline handing out parcels to the poor at Christmas.

Maxima has to study psychology and sociology, take postgraduate degree in youth psychology, before she can hope to help the money problems of young people nowadays. I would agree with Fairy. She can never be the best person to teach young people how to handle their money, yes, she cannot help it if she has a lot of money now, as she has married to wealth, but she can choose how to spend it. Until now, nothing she has done will show, at least to me, that she can handle money very effectively. She looks to me like she is flashing wealth in front of everyone.

I personally couldn't care less about Maxima and im Dutch! But she does know what she is talking about ;she has studied Economics at the Boston University .She is appearing on the show , because she is the chairman of CENTIQ a platform for Financial Awareness. To dismiss her involvement , because she has money doesnt add up.The link will provide you with more information about the organisation. http://www.wijzeringeldzaken.nl/english.aspx

`Well we might actually have to agree to disagree here. I personally find the hypocrisy extremely in the face. And it disturbs me. Apparently it doesn't disturb you or strike you as condescending. We will also have to differ on Maxima's expertise. Being a celebrity UN advisor is imo not equivalent to knowledge. And her years of being a professional? Not so many considering that she met and moved in her mid-late twenties already....
Actually as a recent graduate I think it's absolutely wonderful that Maxima is recognizing the rising debt among young people. Of course I won't be able to see the show but to have someone with her prestige actually sitTing down and talking with my fellow youngins about this disturbing problem makes me very proud and grateful to her. Perhaps our leaders in republics could do the same. And if she can offer advice to these people or highlight this problem to the right people then all the more better. But for now it's wonderful to know that she is recognizing this problem. I am pleasantly surprised that a royal could do so. And sometimes it feels like people complain about royals just to complain. Put yourself in the shoes of the recipients of the royals' attention sometime. It's nice for them to get someone's attention sometimes.

If Maxima can get the message across to this audience then she'll have at made a positive impact. It is quite likely that she'll be giving them the same information that they've heard from their parents, but have chosen to ignore. (How can Mom and Dad know ANYTHING about money etc..?) Also, it is possible that some young people have never had any instruction from their parents on spending, living within your means, saving etc...If Mom and Dad have a poor financial situation due to overspending etc..then perhaps this is an opportunity to educate someone to a new way of living.

this is a bit like an adult that never took any drugs in their life that would teach young drug addicts to get and stay off drugs.

It's done all the time. You don't need the actual experience in order to study and know what works and what doesn't.

So no parent who has never taken drugs him/herself is in a position to warn their children for/about drugs? Come on. And to Wear who says that "she can never be the best person to teach people how to handle their money": maybe not, but she might be the one that draws attention to the situation or that people listen to. A 70 year old professor with a million degrees who's locked himself in his study for half a century may know more but no-one will give a damn, unfortunately. A lot of people in The Netherlands new about this show before it was even broadcast just and only because Máxima was going to be on it. She has made an impact where others would not have.

I agree with Fairy and Cara. If I was a young person living in the netherlands I would be very angry that this woman thought acceptable to give me this kind of advise It's so paternalistic and degrading this is a bit like an adult that never took any drugs in their life that would teach young drug addicts to get and stay off drugs.
It's done all the time. You don't need the actual experience in order to study and know what works and what doesn't. Yes but you study the topic. I don't think that Maxima gives this much thought except to use it for her own gain imo The money topic is very controversial, I rather prefer Laurentien's area
