That's what I had heard too Miss W, but then I also heard that they lost a bundle in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme...I still doubt they're looking for a food handout anytime soon!

Beatrix made the decision, not Rutte!!
She is the one with the interest of going and Rutte accepted!!

They BOTH made the decision. After the postponement of the visit Beatrix got an invitation for this private dinner from the Sultan himself. She discussed with Rutte if it was a good thing to go. Somehow they both concluded it would be a wise thing to do.

From what I've read at TRF the State Visit to Qatar will continue and the trio will be there on March 8 & 9.

Yes, that state visit will continue. But the visit to Oman was scheduled before that visit.

There was in interesting background article somewhere on the why for the private dinner. I don't know if someone on this forum has read the recently published book by the King of Jordan? Apparently there is a chapter on culture and diplomacy in the Middle East. It seems that visits from politicians, ambassadors and heads of state are considered a big honor and that it is considered very rude when a visit is called of. They take that very personal as they see such visits as an excellent way to strength (spelling?) and developing bonds and business ties.
Will see if I can find it...

Are you one of those that thinks that Beatrix can be told what to do?? Roll Eyes Laughing
Rutte is just a puppet so was the last prime minister!!

Sure is not polite to refuse an invitation but in this case I am sure he wouldn't mind!!
News out of Oman!! http://www.google.com/sea...342&q=protest+in+oman

That's why the visit is labelled PRIVATE!!!! This is Beatrix taking care of her business in ME no more no less!!

Thanks Sophie's_Choice for sharing the info about King Abdullah's book. IMO since the King has lived in both Western and Middle Eastern societies he has a unique perspective on the cultural traditions and norms in both parts of the world.

Based upon what I've read here and at other royalty forums, the decision to postpone the visit was not made lightly. There's a debate about this topic right now at the BRMB.

It was indeed not taken lightly. And business men and such who would hop along with the visit were not pleased with the postponement. They thought it was a bad decision. Maybe that played a role in accepting the invitation for the private dinner? We won't know...

@Winx, I didn't say/wrote that Rutte told Beatrix what to do. I wrote they both discussed it and both decided what to do.

Why is it an issue that they go for a private visit? I think I must have missed that earlier in the thread  Blush. Doesn't a private visit ultimately mean that the Dutch citizens will not have to fork out as much money to pay for security etc? Thks.

Correction Winx;
The Navy crew entered Lybia, a souvereign state, as a military detail without permission. This is by military standards an act of war. This makes the Navy crew POW's. They were not kidnapped but arrested.

The Dutch will have to pay anyway, in terms of finances the DRF holds the opinion that expenses are for the people and income is for the family bank accounts. And trust funds.

I for one am of the opinion that private and business are not separate, no matter what the DRF thinks on that. If Wax runs a brothel, cheats on his wife, murders some incompetent subject, openly supports Hitler or rapes an underaged girl, yes, it is private. But it still reflects on his non-private life. (IMO)

I believe the two main points against this visit are a) safety and b) public support for the sultan of Oman and his gouvernment or whoever is head there.

And if it is deemed unwise (as in unsafe) to go there for work, why would it be safe to go there for private?

And how does private support for the establishment (private visit, dinner) not translate into public support for the same establishment?

She is going there to make sure a deal stands with the Dutch Defense Department Oman bought from a very know dutch company 4 maritime vehicles to be use in the military. The whole thinks stinks and the 3 "arretested prisoners of war" were there to pick up a VIP person from another Dutch company. Another related issues to discuss according to a newspaper is Shell.
May be is me making conspiracy theries but the dutch are so to their noses in business with the ME that that even Bea can't refuse to go when she is told by ME.

And only the PM is the only supporting the idea of her going, the rest are calling it stupid!!
