I live in America, and we don't get to hear or read anything in the American news about other European Royal Families besides The British Royal Family, so, forgive me if I'm a little in the dark on this. On various blogs and forums, it sounds like Mary is the Australian Kate Middleton. Am I right? Is she seen as a social climber, or something? If Americans want to read about Mary, Letizia, Maxima, or whoever, we must come to the internet. However, you know how the internet is...we only read the good stuff. What's the scoop on Mary, and why she's so disliked? Thanks!

There are actually several similar threads on this board, I believe, as the question arises every now and then. But she's, in my book, arrogant, full of herself, uppity towards others, greedy, selfish, shallow and in general unpleasant to watch. I don't like her character.

Fake, pretentious. Hoodwinked Prince Frederik. No culture. No manners. Vain & shallow.

Gotcha! It would be nice to hear more about other Royals over here, but we are saturated with the Brits - LOL. It's only this year that I've started to realize that Mary is not as popular as I thought. Plus, I've been reading about rumors of a split, Fred supposedly being depressed, her only staying in the marriage for money and titles, etc, etc. Sounds like William and Waity Katy in about 8 to 10 years.

G & D Fan, to give just one story that illustrates Mary's character:
To a television crew, she cried daintily at the loss of her beloved grandmama ......
.... then it emerged that on leaving for Europe to seal the deal, she tore up and threw all her grandmother's personal letters to her into the garbage.
Another story (true)
Mary, to snare Frederik, pretended to be sporty - golf, yachting etc.
It turned out that she had played school hockey and had been to one golf event as a neophyte when she worked for an ad agency in Melbourne. Her seat on a horse belied her claims that she was a champion horsewoman. She did no dressage, and baby jumps at equestrian events. The yachting was something she latched onto AFTER she met Frederik. Sheer plotting, all the way, and sheer lies. Never let a marketing graduate near a prince, say I! The mirage Mary and her family created around her is simply extraordinary, with hindsight.

OMFG, that's quite disgusting ! So, basically, she was putting on for the camera's? That makes me think differently of her entirely. You would have to be pretty sick to go that low. Thanks for telling me!

That sounds like Kate Middleton...Pretending to be interested in the Prince's hobbies, only to truly have no interest at all. Practically presenting yourself as someone else. Let me guess...her family was in on the social climbing as well, because it benefited them? Of course! So predictable. That sounds like the trashy Middleton's. Now, look at how it's all worked out for her in the end...She looks so unhappy, and they look distant from one another. I guess the so-called "prize" of being Queen of Denmark is enough to put up with anything, in Mary's eyes at least.

LOL! grace and Diana fan, if you don't know why anyone hates mares, you're gona LOVE this board! Personlly, i think showing an interest and participating in your partner's hobbies is both normal and loving. I'm not saying we have to preten we're someone else, but i know many people (myself included) in happy relationships who make an effort to be involeved in their partner's activities. I go to the football with my bf all the time and probaly woudn't go at all if not for him. He goes to my international film festivals and lectures...is it any ddifferent to bon bon cheering on the crypt keeper at the racing? chick

I agree with you about participating in your significant others hobbies, activities, and spending time doing each others things. I think what rubs people the wrong way is acting as though you had an interest in it to begin with, when truth be told, you couldn't have cared less before you met them. Pretending like you have knowledge about a certain person, place, event, sport, or thing. That's the difference. You know, putting on?

Nanna's letters turned it for me.
I think it speaks volumes about Pickles that she waxed lyrical to Freckles about her nanna and yet, threw out her Nanna's letters with such disregard. I guess Nanna served a purpose in Mary acquiring her quarry and, once that was served, Nanna could be thrown out.
Kinda like Beatrice. Beatrice served a purpose in getting Mares access to Fred but, once she had sealed the deal, she shut Beatrice out.
I find Mary to be lacking integrity and that shows in everything she does. It's always forced, fake and there's always an agenda - what's in it for Mary - in everything she does.

It's her fakeness that annoys me the most. She's just so incredibly fake, and it shows.
