This is probably way off topic, but I have a question for American posters.
Is it customary in the U.S. to have the religious wedding ceremony outdoors, in the open air?
I noticed that Chelsea and Jenna did.
I my country, religious wedding ceremonies have to take place in a church.

I don't know if it's customary in the states, but a lot of couples (or brides) prefer outdoor weddings, like beaches, parks, gardens. Wedding agencies, and wedding planners advertize outdoor venues quiet often.

Hi earl grey,
It often depends upon the denomination's rules and traditions. Some Christian ministers are happy to hold a ceremony outside of a church ie: Jenna Bush's wedding at her parents' ranch or Chelsea Clinton's wedding (Christian/Jewish ceremony). Other faiths ie: Roman Catholics require that the wedding to be held inside a church.

Years ago, when I was a child, virtually all religious ceremonies here in the U.S. were indoors. Nowadays very few Protestant ministers, Catholic priests, or rabbis care. (In the case of the latter, they still want a chuppah, of course.) I understand the appeal of an outdoor wedding; however, in most parts of the U.S. the weather is variable (undependable), so people are taking a risk in planning one, IMO. As a guest, I prefer to be indoors.

Thanks for explaining. I guess it depends on your pastor/rabbi/priest then .
I too can see the appeal of an outdoor wedding, if the weather is cooperative.
In my country, we just had a very rainy and wet july so I guess a lot of brides and grooms were disappointed.

First, my vote went to Charlene, hands down. Catherine's was a copy of Grace's. Yawn.
To answer earl grey's question: I think it depends on the religion, time of year (like-you wouldn't have a ceremony in January outside) and what the bride and groom want for their wedding.
