Kate Middleton not only pales in the looks department compared to the Bhutanese princesses, they outstrip her in both education and work experience.

This particular one shown above has an undergrad degree from Stanford and a law masters from Harvard.  Thumb up

There's no way Waity can compare.

Of course, who would dare not to work hard and try to be as charming as possible when they've received a nice big engagement ring, Birkin bag, Anna Hu custom made diamond earrings, various Chanel suits, etc. at the very beginning of their role as royal consort and their country's GDP is under 25k USD?  Icecream

dunno digitalkat...I somehow get the feeling, that without these luvvly expensive trappings, our gal would not have agreed to be married or to stay married. She somehow strikes me as someone who loves luxury and doesn't mind who knows... Blink

G Smiley

I'm not sure why you think that. Her wedding was a once in a lifetime event and it was a royal one at that.
She got a Birkin bag for a wedding present to commemorate the special event. A single Birkin bag might be "special" and a worthy gift to a queen' by Bhutanese standards, but it isn't for wealthy westerners like Mary who owns MANY Hermes, Prada, Chanel, Bottega Venetta, etc.. bags.

It's not like Jetsun is acquiring designer bags like they're cartons of milk like Mary does. Mary would've been insulted if all she got was one Birkin bag  - and for a wedding present at that. F&M got so many extravagant presents that they failed to accept all of them - including a sail boat IIRC.

In most of Jetsun's engagements thus far, she doesn't even carry a hand bag. In their trip to Japan and UK when they wore western clothes for some occasions, she carried a Chanel bag. She has to maintain a certain level of style because she is the consort to a head of state. I'd worry only if she starts accumulating expensive, western designer duds. Another Imelda or Mary would not be a good thing - especially in Bhutan.
[/quote]

Well, Jetsun is really poised and charming and everything Waity isn't, and I admit it's a great pleasure just looking at her.
I mentioned this before, I will repost it here:

I talked to a friend of mine about Jetsun, and she told me that around the time of their wedding, a Hong Kong magazine and several news agencies published articles citing sources from Macau that Jetsun Pema went to Macau often as a teenager (when she was 17) and loved the casinos there, she is reputedly a fan of Baccarat games and was already known in the casino circle for her lavish spending. Macau is well known for their casinos, and many tourists go there for there to gamble, so there's nothing criminal about it. But this report really just enforced my belief that Jetsun has lavish tastes. Apparently, their marriage was arranged early on, and her family raised her according to the way they would raise a future queen, providing her with a comfortable lifestyle abroad.

Now, it's worth mentioning that Hong Kong's media has been heavily influenced by British tabloids and have even taken on a more aggressive approach when it comes to publishing scandals, and the accuracy of their tabloids is also known to be higher than their Western counterparts. (They have exposed an impressive number of cases of corruption/extramarital affairs conducted by numerous politicians and celebrities with great accuracy, and in some cases, the information they collected was professional enough to be used as evidence in court.)

In contrast, Bhutan is very much like Thailand when it comes to controlling their media and their royal family's reputation, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are no tabloids from Bhutan leaking this.

Regarding the designer bags etc.  I feel with Jetsun she dresses very simply whether wearing the traditional Bhutanese clothes or western clothes.  She seems understated in public.

However in private i would not be surprised if she had loads of designer stuff.  She and her husband are both wealthy people and i don't begrudge them their fortune.

Well not really... Smiley    Laugh bounce

I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't.
The king and queen may be wealthy by Bhutanese standards, but I don't think they are by western standards. They may have to purchase nice western clothes and accessories which are in keeping with their status as heads of state for the occasional overseas visits, but at home, they always wear traditional clothes for official engagements.

Also, this couple appear very much in touch with their people. The king took 30 school children on a long distance bike ride. The queen shared tea at the palace with taxi drivers who wanted to wish her a happy birthday. They sat on the lawn instead of on chairs. This couple often attends events in rough, rural areas. They are very respectful of their country's traditions often leading prayers in temples, etc.

I think they balance the dignity of their role with the demands of their society and culture. Yes, they behave in a regal manner as expected of their station, but they also keep it real. This is why I doubt that Jetsun is loading up on the designer duds for private use.

Until I see pictures of Jetsun in private moments always wearing designer stuff, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Recall that Mary wore $300 designer shorts whilst taking out the garbage.

Great post!  Star

Even if they are very wealthy and she does wear designer stuff 'at home', who even cares so long as she remains attentive, understanding, compassionate, and dutiful where her people are concerned. A future queen wearing nice clothes isn't new, and her parents had money, so I'm sure she has nice things and enjoyed casinos as a teen. What matters is her attitude about materialism and appearance, and she seems like a very open and game lady so far. We've got far worse examples making asses of themselves on the regular, and they are ALWAYS in designer clothes.

Well we don't know that Jetsun's gambling escapades are true. We do know just about everything about Mary, Kate, and MM, though.
But suppose Jetsun did gamble when she was a teenager.

1. What she is allowed to do before becoming royal is very different from what she is allowed to do as queen. Bhutan is a very traditional society. It is not like Denmark, Norway, and Britain. It's crazy what Mary, Kate, MM get away with. (What will we call this trio, BTW?)

2. Enjoying gambling doesn't necessarily translate into enjoying overspending on luxury goods and acquiring more than you'll ever use.
Gambling is a game, even a sport to some. Some people are very good at it. I saw a TV program about a woman who makes a living at it. She isn't addicted to it. She's just very good. She can gain $100K or lose $100K in one night. Those are the stakes of that occupation. But she averages out ahead. Her income allowed her to buy her home. She's married with two kids. She's home for the kids during the day. After her husband comes home from work and the kids go to bed, she heads off to "work" in the casinos.

3. Gambling is a different kind of addiction than shopping, when it's an addiction.
Unless I hear about Jetsun sneaking off to Macau periodically, I won't worry about this. Even if she is addicted to gambling, I doubt the palace would allow the behavior to continue.

TGB agreed - i have no criticism of the Royal couple they seem like really nice people.  Designer clothes or not - what i like about the couple is that they seem to be very much in touch with their people.

It's awful to compare, but I look at this picture and can't remember the one last year around this time of The Cambridges, the husband with his stupid face and the wife with her sailor outfit and big ass grin.  I should send them this picture with a note attached saying: this is how you console someone!

The day after their wedding, when they did that stupid walk.

Funny, out of the three big weddings last year (Britain, Bhutan, and Monaco), these two are the ones that got the least amount of press, and yet seem to be the happiest.  Sure, they haven't reached a year yet, but by this point in time (10 months) after the wedding, we could all see that things weren't going to well for the Cambridges and Grimaldis.

Ah yes, the honeymoon.  But we're not supposed to know about those photos, remember.  They're "private".  It's sad that we still have to go back a year, though.

They must have held hands this year. Must have.
