Am stuck by how genuinely happy Mary looks in the pictures from Aus. It's such a contrast to how stressed and pissed off she looks in Denmark. Why?

I thought perhaps it's her 'home coming' fantasy, but in Denmark she is more popular, gets more coverage, and everyone has to curtsey to her.

Is she so relieved to be able to speak English again? Feels more free than before?

Is there something we don't know about? Did she receive some wonderful news?

Maybe it's because she's the hometown girl and Fred is the guest. No matter how long she's lived in Denmark or is their crown princess she's still not Danish. She may hold a Danish passport but she'll never be Danish. In Australia Fred is the stranger not her. I'm just guessing of course but since she's never mastered the language she probably doesn't feel all that 'at home' in Denmark and that's her own fault IMO

She is probably just happy (and über-hyper) to be "home". It is very common that people who live abroad from their birth country are very ecstatic coming back. There are things you really miss. I understand it, but she is just too annoying for me to rejoice in her case. She is behaving like a prisoner set free, it is embarrassing to watch. And Derf certainly does look embarrassed along with the rest of us.

I'm thinking the same thing, whimsicalwriter.

I don't believe that Yrma has adopted Denmark as her own. She's addicted to all the perks and advatages that come with her position, but I don't believe for a minute she likes it there. Especially, surrounded by the DRF. She thought that everybody would lover her to pieces - and maybe the DRF did in the beginning - but now the family-honeymoon is over, and she better does as Daisy says.

In Australia, she's at home, and I mean really at home! Daisy & grey men are far, far away and she thinks, she can do as she pleases. As she did in the beginning in DEN.

I think it's a "you are done with playing the Crown Princess, now be one!" syndrome, insisted upon by the DRF, she cannot handle. Worst of all, she's done Freddles in, and is really ALL ALONE now in DEN.

What a damn good question/post. Star

I think she feels this is her territory(which it is) and she can also show everyone(those she knew pre Fred) here how far she has come.

Give me the child until he's seven and he's mine forever. It's her home, her heartland, her culture. Foreign can be a bore and she is able to escape its shackles for a while - that familiar accent ( not just language), the sweets you ate as a kid, the TV chat show hosts with the cheesy grins that you remember from the old days. Oz is where she'd be to this day if he had not had a title and some loot.

I agree with all of above.
Mary would have to feel 'at home'.  She is also not a newcomer to Denmark anymore.  I think she feels confident in her new life AND happy to be coming home.

There is something really special about bringing your husband and kids to your homeland.
I've had that feeling myself.  It's illogical in some ways because they can't feel what you do but still you're so happy to have them see it with you.  It doesn't matter if your family are Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, bogans, simple bakers, teachers or royalty.  The unconditional feeling of acceptance is universal when visiting one's family.  You love to catch up with them and for them to hold your children.

I think Mary is enjoying the spoken language, the unspoken culture and being in a friendly familiar place.  Denmark has proven to be really welcoming and friendly to Mary but in Denmark she she might feel more pressure to not put a foot wrong.  Here might offer her a little time of relaxation.  I think she could be feeling proud of Denmark's contribution to the Green Delegation.  She looks like she enjoys promoting it.

The other thing that can't be overlooked is the climate.
To leave a grey sky and cooler weather and come to a bright sunny warm place with a clear blue sky really does lift the spirits.  My English friend gets depressed during the winter and it is (she thinks) only due to the weather and lack of sunlight.
I hope both Fred and Mary soak up some more sunshine here before heading home for all the joyous traditional Christmas engagements in Denmark.  I hope they are refreshed.

I don't think there's anything wrong per se with the fact that Mary prefers Australia to Denmark. That is the country that shaped her life at the end of the day.

What bugs me is that she is now a paid representative of Denmark who ALWAYS seems a hell of a lot more excited to be in Australia than the country that gave her the lifestyle she was too lazy to even attempt to create for herself.

Talk about a lack of grace, class and dignity.

I don't agree. I think coming home as a crown princess is what makes her really, really happy. She's not a sentimental girl. She isn't happy to be home just to be home. She's happy when she's back is Hobart, but not as happy as when she's being greeted by VIPs in Sydney, Melbourne, etc.

She's absolutely ecstatic at the adulation and attention she gets during official visits to Oz. She wasn't this happy during previous un-official visits (no, they weren't private either). Meeting VIPs re-inforces her sense of self importance. It's a huge ego boost for her. She doesn't consider the fact that she's famous through no personal accomplishment. But then neither are Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

The gray men in the Danish court don't really control Mary. She spends as much as she likes and her role enables her to move in the highest levels of Danish society. Much of her time is spent shopping, socializing, doing whatever she wants really (she doesn't even have to care for her kids) and barely working. What could she complain about - except she's stuck living in a palace with a man who doesn't love her and the entire staff surrounding her knows it! Yeah, that would make me run to Oz too. So I don't think she's homesick. I think this trip is a fantasy escape for her.

And why is she happier at the official attention in Oz vs. Denmark? Because Oz is a bigger pond than Denmark. In Denmark, she's a big fish in a small pond. In Oz, it makes her really happy to think she's a big fish in a bigger pond. The Aussie and English-speaking audience was always more important to her.

I have to agree with Poca on this. I don't think MEvita misses Australia for any setimental reasons. Just see how fast she discarded her friends, family and her granny's letters etc. after Fred called her to Europe. She's happy because she not only can show off in front of people who wouldn't giver her the time of the day or her old friends, she can also show it off in front of Fred: "See? You may not love me but Australians love ME!"

I think it could also be a bit of a power shift for Mary. She feels happy because she feels as if she has more power when she is in Aus than in Denmark. All the focus is on her, all the press is on her, and Fred is the handbag. In Denmark, especially post Fred gallivanting with the blonde, I think she realised how little power she has there. Yes Fred might be a babbling fool most of the time, but he's still the Crown Prince and can drop her if he wants to. In Aus, Fred barely gets a look in, and Mary could feel that all the attention she is getting gives her more power to negotiate with.

mary's attention in Oz had been prearranged and prepaid by the DRF and even on this basis the attention is minimal - fred has not engaged in a similar strategy, he does not enlist the assistance of a PR team to manage his entry in the country.  As a few here have pointed out, the handing out of the danish flag to pedestrian traffic, conspicuous police presence, prearranged meetings with politicians, dignitaries and socialites - all paid for by Fred's kingdom - mary is still a dumb slutt, no matter what she's wearing.

This tour must be part of her divorce settlement....Otherwise, why would the DRF indulge her in this way if Fred can't stand her anymore ?  Whistle

Before Fred, Mary was just another Eastern suburbs social climber, desperately sniffing around the z-list and trying to ingratiate herself.

Now she's a Princess. By virtue of Fred, she means something.  All those celebs who ignored her years ago - she's now higher than them on the social scale.

She's happy because this trip is triumphant.  She has made it.  All that scrambling and sleeping with footy players and she won the biggest jackpot of all.

Unfortunately, that jackpot is a drunken husband who loves blondes, four kids who she probably can't remember the names of, and a life in Denmark where she can't speak the language and has no friends outside of Fred.

In her mind, this is triumph.  Any normal / intelligent person looks at her and sees an empty carcass.
