Sheikh Sabah, Emir of Kuwait, died

Sheikh Sabah, the emir of Kuwait, has died at the age of 91, state television in the emirate reports. He had been in a hospital in the United States since July, after an operation in Kuwait. What he suffered has not been disclosed.

Sabah IV al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, as his full name, led the oil state since 2006. Before that, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs for decades. After the fall of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, he advocated closer ties with Iraq, the country that invaded Kuwait in August 1990. The ensuing Gulf War lasted through February 1991.

He also advocated a diplomatic solution to the conflict between the Gulf state of Qatar and some other Arab countries. He had strong ties with the United States and the United Kingdom.

Shortly before the announcement of his death, normal TV programming was interrupted. Then verses from the Quran were read. According to the constitution, Sabah is to be succeeded by his half-brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah. He served as Secretary of the Interior and was Deputy Chief of the National Guard. He has been serving for Sabah since July.
