I have to agree with Nappyolean, I would have preferred the skirt in the dark blue/purple of the top.

It was one of her rare 'what was she thinking' moments.

It has been acknowledged* that it was a lost bet. We all know that the Queen has a very strange penchant for ..shall we say: practical jokes?
No, seriously, it must have been a lost bet and they are probably still laughing their fannies off.

*acknowledged in top secret files of course!!!

I seem to recall she wore this for the Millennium festivities on NYE 1999. Whenever I see this ensemble I'm always reminded of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant ( not sure if anyone else read that book as kid- if you're unsure google it!)

It was a Royal Variety Performance at Birmingham Hippodrome Nov 1999. As a Brummie, I want to know what we had done to make the Queen turn up in this

Thank you for correcting me! I honestly can't answer that! My only thought is that perhaps she thought that the area is called the Black Country because of its lack of lighting and this she needed a very bright and eye catching outfit so everyone could see her?? I wonder if that skirt was illuminous?  Laugh bounce

I'm sure there's a very serious and thoughtful reason behind it, but she looks like she for dressed in a powe cut!!

It is a shocker of a dress. Iím also sure that she wore it another time at some event with children as a focus, sorry itís a blur! Btw Iím from the Black Country and weíre definitely not Brummies haha 😂 thereís a lot of friendly teasing about this...

I live in Derbyshire and have heard of this friendly teasing! I did have someone from Wolverhampton tell me what you just did, clearly I didnt listen to him!! There's a similar teasing between north and south Derbyshire...Buxton is very different from, say, Swadlincote!

I put my comment on the Bea thread, forgetting this one exists, so Iíll say it again.

The Queens Minty green outfit is Gorgeous and the hat with the perfect complementary flower colors  just nails it.

Lovely lovely lovely. Happy for Sir Tom and his family and the NHS.

What a year for this 100 year old man. Amazing. It is great to see the Queen working again, as she is so busy she surely missed it a lot.

Glad she didnít retire, actually. For a while I was thinking she should. But when you see things, two peers (not rank but age) of the fewer and fewer remaining, itís just lovely to see.

She looked genuinely happy. Both did. Sir Tom seems like a great optimist and a good person.

Champagne Champagne Champagne Captain Sir Thomas Moore has a beautiful ring to it.

We should really start a thread as an ode to people who have achieved extraordinary feats when no one would begrudge them putting up their feet. What could we call it?
" the Sunset Years" ?  Thinking
"Tremendous Twlight" ?  Thinking

It also proves you can make a difference no matter what your age.

HM will never retire - nor abdicate unless she has mental disabilities.
