I don't think the monarchy will be going anywhere, but if Charles reigns it will most likely be brief and I agree, it is in a way a bit tragic that he has waited so long. He could have changed so many things and brought the monarchy as an institution into the 21st century. There's talk HM did, but how? Did she? Not really, she has done nothing of note other than be there for sixty plus years. It's all propaganda. I do think William will do the same as his grandmother, if be less noticeable; he has already spoken of his future role like that. He'll do the bare minimum required, and hide away from the plebs. None of this 'I have to be seen to be believed' guff from him, he doesn't care or want to be seen. For all the talk about how he seems to have stepped up recently I see no evidence of it and he is pushing forty. I recall reading William has had some training so to speak from tutors and the like but he pretty much ignored it and did his own thing - even worse was allowed to, possibly because of guilt and his hissy fits about being forced to do anything he does not want to. For all Charles's faults he at least has a sincere devotion to duty and the future role he'll have.

The Queen, for all her faith in God and sense of duty in not abdicating, well, all I think of is Juan Carlos saying something like: I don't want to wait til my son is an old man to inherit the job he's been trained for. Not abdicating has created this vacuum where she will be gone and people won't know what to do as she's been around so long. She's created a precedent of basically doing nothing - which William will follow, I'm sure, but Charles, no. The latter I think wants to be a more modern king. And who knows how people will react when they are used to a monarch who is just there in the background as a pleasant old lady.
I do believe Charles will make a great king. He's like the greatest prince of wales. I just feel like The Queen seems to not care anymore. The mage and reputation of the monarchy keeps going down and down.

Star  Me too.  He will make a fantastic king!

I feel like Charles would really make the monarchy into the 21st century and do many innovative things for the monarchy. Right now the monarchy is in trouble with scandals and Brexit. There needs to be a change!

Possibly OT but:

as a result of the findings of the Scottish court today, Boris Johnson is the first PM to have been found by a court to have misled a king or queen.  It could lead to some difficult questions - she effectively has to do as her PM advises (here, the prorogation) with the understanding that he or she be honest with her.

I too think he will be great and actually, I quite like the idea of Camilla as Queen because she seems fun and down to earth. I don't like the monarchy as a concept though, certainly not the British setup.  Perhaps Charles' greatest gift would be to drive some social change and then let the institution end gracefully, a Rexit. Perhaps agree to end it on his death, if he precedes Camilla she can go live in Gloucestershire again. The rest can give the land and wealth back, get a small pay off and never darken our doors again.

They will glue their royal bottoms to the throne because otherwise they will not be able to afford the lifestyle they are used to. Without their enormous landed property and the money they get from them, they would have to sell their private jewellery, silverware, art pieces, wgatever. And they wouldn't have so many wealthy friends and acquaintances because they would have no influence . Look at all those royals without realms.
And I agree with those of you who think QE should abdicate and become a pensioner -- after all her own son has reached retirement age too.

Getting pretty OT, but Charles is his mother's child temperament wise. He ostriches just as much as his mother, he hasn't taken control over himself or his children. His reign will probably be short (definitely in comparison to Lizzy) and unremarkable IMO.

They're all spoiled and useless prats who will eventually (not soon enough) be put out to pasture.

Despite ostriching I think Charles has a stronger sense of duty and care towards people. and an interest in people, than his mother has ever shown in her life. It's a good quality in a monarch. To care about all people - as Edward VII snarled famously when teased for asking after a socialist politician's health, "I am the king of ALL my people!" And that man turned out to be a brilliant king who, if he lived longer, could have at least postponed WWI.

I don't believe the BRF would go anywhere unless there was some massive revolution and overhaul of the ethos of British governance and current structures.

I personally could do without King Tampaccio and his Whore-sy Duchess. I dont think he has the self control to be the impartial a political monarch that his mother has been. He's also extremely susseptable to flattery. This has been discussed in every biography of CHarles that I have ever read.

They aren't going anywhere but they are going downwards if you see the trend from 2011 to now. Their impact isn't going to be as big as well as their popularity.

I am going to give you a star every day for as long as I remember, Countess.  Your sentiments are mine.  My admiration for her was deep for many years, but I look at her now with contempt.  She is complicit in his dealings, as though she herself were trafficking these underage girls.  This will be her legacy, and she will have earned it.
