Amager is an island that makes up the southern part of Copenhagen. It was previously known as the ‘shit’ island (Lorteøen) as until the Seventies it was used as a place to dump litter. Amager has the reputation of a place where people have tattoos, get high, get into fights, get shot or arrested.
But times are changing. Now people can swim in Denmark’s famous Harbour Baths or take a drink along the harbour. Amager stretches from the Opera and Holmen down to the beach park of Amager Strand and the picturesque fishing village of Dragør. Amager Fælled is an enormous unspoilt tract of land that offers you a real escape from the bustle of the city. Take your own architectural tour of Ørestad; one of Copenhagen’s newest areas and a hub of inspirational new buildings, such as the Mountain Dwellings, Number 8 building and Bella Sky.
