Duchess of Kent: The reluctant royal at 80SHE prefers to be known simply as Katharine and is fiercely proud of her Yorkshire roots. When she travels she does so without any royal
paraphernalia, unaccompanied by bodyguards, and is happy taking a bus or hailing a black cab. She has confided a liking for EastEnders and
listening to Michael Bublé and for years she taught music incognito at a primary school in Hull where pupils referred to her
as “Mrs Kent” or just “Miss” and had no idea she was married to the Queen’s cousin.
ON PARADE: Greeting an old soldier at a Royal Mews lunch in 1984Yes, it would be safe to say that the Duchess of Kent has never been the most showy of royals. No one even seems to know much about
how she will be marking her milestone 80th birthday today. Neither Buckingham Palace nor Kensington Palace appear to speak for her, referring
me to the affable PR Sue Ayton, who says: “Nothing official has been arranged. She is just celebrating privately at home.”
