In that one photo of Paola and Princess Grace side by side, they look like sisters! Shocked Thanks SwashbucklerSmiley

Paola was stunning.  What did she see in him?  However, she smokes and she has not aged well.  I hope she's happier than she looks because she does not smile a lot in public.

I think Albert was a nice looking young man, and he and Paola made a Golden Couple together.

All of these beautiful photos of Paola make me sort of wistful for a time when royal women, and women in general (and men too, for that matter) had more of a magic and a mystique about them; Paola, Grace, Jacqueline Kennedy, etc. had a mysterious, elegant, remote quality that Mary/Kate/Mette-Marit can't touch or ever hope to emulate. I suppose this is just part of my overall fascination with the past (I'm a historian by background) and I'm sure I'm idealising the earlier royals, but it's hard not to be disappointed by the current crop (with the exception of Letizia, generally).

I agree with you 100%. I even said that on another Royals Board and almost got my head taken off. Secret

I'm sorry but it's the truth...these women don't have the special spark that those 50's and 60's icons like Paola, Grace, Jackie, Farah Diba of Iran had. They seemed to have an aura of mystery about them.

In all fairness to the current crop, there is no longer any such thing as privacy or mystery or true glamour, thanks to the Internet and the Information Age. EVERYTHING about these Princesses, their lives and their pasts are common knowledge, unlike with Royal and famous women of that bygone era.

Great pictures, Swashbuckler! Star  Young Paola was absolutely beautiful.

I've never believed the story that Laurent is not Albert's son.  I happen to see a strong resemblance between Albert and Laurent.

Yes IA that Laurent looks so much like the younger Albert...just picture him "chunkier"

It was also an era of much more elegant fashion. The simplicity of dress that Jackie Kennedy perfected and that others emulated let the beauty of these royal women shine through. Much of today's fashion wears the wearer, intead of the other way around. Just contrast Paolo with her hair pulled back and a simple pillbox to Princess Victoria with that bug-screen of a fascinator flopping in her face that she ``wore'' recently.

Well, the occasion was the 50th Anniversary of the Inauguration of the Health Center of the Red Cross in La Hulpe, February 4, 1961, in the presence of Mayor Pierre Rouelle. I assume the woman is Pierre Rouelle's wife. I couldn't find out her name.

Thanks Swash...for a minute I thought it might be Maria-Gabriela di Savoia, who was reportedly quite the Royal bombshell back in the late 50's and a lot of Royal men were in love with her, including(rumored) her own cousin King Baudouin and more seriously Felipe of Spain.

But that lady is not tall enough to be MG, who I read was about 5'10 .
