I don't think she was ever a serious contender to be his wife, nor do I think she necessarily wanted to be. I like Camilla, but I do think there was a part of her that enjoyed being the other woman, and I don't think she really wanted to buckle down and marry into the rigidness of the royal family. Once their affair continued, I believe that love really grew between them - she loves him, and he loves the way she dotes on him. Things have certainly changed in what's "acceptable" for a spouse.

The one thing I find very interesting is that you never hear about Camilla's children. I'm a royal fan, and I actually only realized she had children not that long ago, because they're so very little talked about!

I always thought it was because he had to marry a virgin and Camilla was far from that by all accounts.

With hindsight marrying her would have solved a lot of issues now.  No William/Harry and wives.  No Diana.  History would be very different.

Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity. All over the world, a standard bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden, a very British girl who transcended nationality.

I have never seen the love between these two. As another poster said earlier in the thread, Charles is too emotionally stunted to feel that kind of love and Camilla is too shrewd for it. Charles is fond of her because she doesn't take away from his spotlight. He would never have been able to have a stable marriage with any woman whose charisma had the potential to overshadow him. Camilla pampered and coddled him because she understood his need for being pampered. In my opinion, any woman with a spine would not have lasted with this insecure man child who wants to be worshiped for his existence. It's interesting that a certain princess of Europe gets ridiculed for her promiscuous past before she got married but Camilla is admired for handling her 'situation' better.

I  think Camilla is shrew enough to know not to upstage Charles and to pamper him. She also knows not to foot a foot wrong  if she wants Charles to be King and herself Queen consort.  I don't think we will really know for sure what Camilla will be like as Queen Consort until she is it.  She may be the power behind Charles in many ways now and may also be a huge power behind the Throne one Charles becomes King.  What Camilla thinks about Kate, Meghan, and all the other Royals may not really be know until she is Queen,
