Fred and Mary have acquired some very interesting contemporary art and installed it in their home. I know contemporary art is not for everyone, but I do think some of what they have is very good. Don't know if they have an art consultant or not, but I would assume so.

Same counts for the Belgian king and queen. They installed some great contemporary artworks in the castle in Brussels. This is mostly Paola's merit. She's very into contemporary art. i doubt she has much official consulting. She has a friendship with the curator Jan Hoet though. I'm sure he advises her whom to explore more.

My favourite: the green beetle ceiling by Jan Fabre.

That is interesting. Are there other royals who are interested in and who surround themselves with contemporary art? I know Charles would not be among their number, given his well-known distaste for modern architecture.  But what about everyone else?

I realize that many of them live in palaces that are actually owned by the government, and which contain precious artworks from the past that are to be conserved. But surely there's room to add a few exciting new things in all those many-roomed palaces.

Well, I actually like a couple of the installations on M&F's house. The ceiling treatment is an interesting update to all those baroque ceilings with swags and putti. And I like the wall with the two doors and the mural in blues and wine colors. It reminds me of a tapestry by a contemporary Scandinavian artist. Can't say I'm wild about outerspace mural and the street scene looks like it was lifted from one of Jacob Lawrence's children's books. Still, it's an interesting use of the space space, plus some contemporary artists now have the cachet of having their works featured in the palace.

Maxima gives out the Appeltjes van Oranje award each year via the Oranje Fonds. The trophy is a bronze sculpture by Beatrix.

Cool! I don't know why but that sculpture makes me think of those orange-flavored foil-wrapped chocolate oranges we get at Christmas time. Wonder if they're Dutch exports?

Princess Louise of Great Britain (1848-1939) made a marble sculpture of her brother, Prince Arthur.

Prince Eugene of Sweden (1865-1947) was the son of King Oscar II and Queen Sofia of Sweden. He painted landscapes.

Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Russia (1882-1960) was the daughter of Tsar Alexander III of Russia. She was a sister of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.     
Grand Duchess Olga painted landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.

Can't post pics from other threads.. but didn't Philippe of Belgium proudly showed a painting of his daughter to the French Pres? And wasn't it said, that Philippe had painted that picture of Elisabeth himself?
It was quite nice, not quite a Winterhalter, but a better resemblance to the actual person than many of his wife's photoshopped pictures..

Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte of Great Britain, was an artist. She painted a trellis on the ceiling of the Picnic Room in Queen Charlotte's Cottage in Kew.
