Designer of Sophie, Countess of Wessex's Funeral Dress Reveals Sweet Detail Honoring Queen Elizabeth

Suzannah said Tuesday that it was "an absolute honour and privilege" to design Sophie, Countess of Wessex's dress for Queen Elizabeth's funeral Monday

The dress worn by Sophie, Countess of Wessex to Queen Elizabeth's funeral had a subtle (albeit intricately created) nod to the late monarch.

In a Tuesday Instagram post, Suzannah, who designed Sophie's dress, called it "an absolute honour and privilege to be given this opportunity to be a small part of modern history yesterday."

After thanking Jenny King Embroidery for "enabl(ing) the making of this beautiful coat dress design for HRH Countess of Wessex," the designer shared that the design was a tribute to the Queen's "favorite flowers."

"Many beautiful panels of Italian wool and silk satin were embroidered as a tribute with Lily of the Valley — Her Majesty's favourite flowers, intertwined with florals from her wedding bouquet," Suzannah added.

Sophie, 57, is a big fan of Suzannah's. She wore one of her designs to Prince Philip's funeral last year, and regularly wears Suzannah's designs to the Royal Ascot.

I love the picture of her comforting George.
I thought it had been clarified that it was her own son, James, in the photo?

It's definitely George. You can see Charlotte next to him.

So beautiful. I wonder if she'll ever wear it again publicly or if it's too prominently and inextricably linked with the funeral for her.  How long did it take them to do that magnificent embroidery??

It would take numerous hours to do all the hand embroidery. I have an aunt who has been an embroideress for years.

I notice that in the photos, the seamstresses are focused on garment construction rather than embroidery. And the extreme consistency of the embroidery texture makes me think that it may have been done from images scanned into a computerized embroidery machine. These days that kind of technology IS available.

From the embroider's website it looks like the use vintage sewing machine to free hand satin stick embroidery.  It's a very interesting technique that I've never seen before.

Seems that they are keeping their military commitments during the mourning period.

That is a rather extraordinary dress, however the embroidery on it came about. I myself, after enlarging the pictures and having a good look, believe it's by machine. I think she will save it for the next great funeral, or pass it on to Louise if it will fit her.

It's a bit morbid, but I would love to see a display of BRF mourning wear down through the ages. It was the custom in earlier times to wear mourning colors for a longer period of time, which flowed into half mourning. None the less, they used intricate embroidery and jet beading to embellish the garments.

Not right away, of course.

As per suzannahlondon instagram, the embroidery was made by jennykingembroidery prior to the cut and sewing of the cloth.

Maybe I missed it and if I did I'm sorry - but does anyone have the provenance on Sophie's strawberry brooch? It's unique and pretty.

The only reference I could find is from the Sun, which mentions she also wore the brooch to Ascot in 2014:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/...eral-subtle-detail-dress/

Quote
On the lapel of her dress, she wore an eye-catching black and silver brooch, featuring two strawberries. The last time Sophie wore it in public was in 2014, when she attended Royal Ascot alongside Queen Elizabeth.
