It has long-oft been said that Sophie is a favourite of QEII, I remember reading a long while ago that she was the only daughter in law ever allowed to sit in a car/carriage with her, though I imagine this has since been changed.
And I agree about her seeing her as a second mum, they do seem close and the Queen was very accommodating when Sophie married Edward, such as understanding the need for privacy and things a bit more low-key.

Certainly Camilla and Kate have ridden with her to various events.

That may be since. I distinctly remember reading that fact but it was around ten years ago I read it perhaps? And the whole monarchy has changed since then so I'd be very surprised if that was still the case! I seem to recall that it was Sophie being the only DIL allowed to ride in the car at Christmas or something like that, but my memory isn't that strong!

I wish an official portrait to mark her birthday had been released.  I know - the Wessexes value their privacy; they aren't THE family, and maybe Louise didn't want it, but - still!!

This is part of their appeal - they never make a fuss about themselves or about their children. The children come along but are not featured with photo series. You get to see them but they are not shoved into your face. They are not overly styled. They don't look for attention. They have internalized the principle of the firm "work hard, but don't fuss".

That's why I like her so much. And she so charming. They just want their kids to have a normal upbringing, as much as possible, it seems.
