Nothing would surprise me about Margaret. She was spoiled and a bit of a hedonist so if she had splendid affairs that would square. She valued freedom without truly understanding that she kept choosing the gilded cage. Or maybe it chose her and she finally relented.
Margaret wanted both freedom and the perks that came with the gilded cage. In that way she resembles her Uncle David, and her great grandfather Edward VII.
I read that Margaret's parents wanted her to marry the Earl of Dalkeith, heir to the Duke of Buccleuch. Her friend Colin Glenconner said: "If the King had lived, he would have made Princess Margaret marry Johnny Dalkeith. With his houses and his land, she would have had a virtual state of her own."
I've heard that bit about the Earl of Dalkeith before, and i have to agree with Cordtx - I've always thought Margaret would have been happier with a wealthy Duke, and thus far less dependence on and competition with HLM.
