It is one of my dreams to visit these gorgeous places and museums, I have read so much on the Romanovs and would love to see these places.

They are magnificent but it must be remembered that many of them have had to be reconstructed due to the massive damage done during WWII.
The Catherine Palace, for instance, where the Amber Room is ... when I first visited in 2002 they were still redoing the Amber Room as the original totally disappeared after the war. The redone version was finished when I visited in 2016 but they still hadn't started on the chapel.

Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo is undergoing an amazing renovation. I was supposed to see it last October. I doubt I ever will now sadly.

Another one? We were there in 2015 and it looked gorgeous. The Amber Room was unbelievable and I truly hope you get there someday.

They’re fixing up Nicholas and Alexandra’s palace to its former glory. The reminder actions and recreations look amazing!

It’s funny Ellie. St. Petersburg’s a beautiful city - the buildings remind me of fancy chocolate boxes. But it’s all very new and I think the current regime wants to put its best foot forward.

That's interesting. I was there in fall 1991 (at the very end of the Soviet era), and they had just begun restoration of the Amber Room. Guess it took quite a while.

You could very well be right, Dio. It's been so long since I was there I don't really remember.

Nobody knows what happened to the original amber room, but no expense was spared in the new one. It’s gorgeous.

Totally agree - the Amber Room is gorgeous. It was also interesting that in 2002 we were allowed to take photos in that room but by 2016 there was a no photos rule in the Amber Room although photos were allowed elsewhere.
I have been to St Petersburg three times and would love to go back as there are still many places to see. I have only been to Moscow twice. One of my dreams is to do the Trans-Siberian railway - probably won't happen but until I am told I can't go overseas again I will dream.
