St. James' Palace was secondary in importance to the Palace of Whitehall for most Tudor and Stuart monarchs. The palace increased in importance during the reigns of the early Georgian monarchy.

The proclamation of the new monarch occurs at St. James Palace.
Who was the first sovereign to be proclaimed at St. James Palace?

Oliver Cromwell turned St. James Palace into army barracks during the Commonwealth years. King Charles II had the palace restored.

Thanks for posting that Cyril - I am just now re-reading Queen Mary's biography (by James Pope-Hennessey) and enjoyed the glimpse into what was her home for many years.

There is another York House within St James's, I believe.  Edward VIII lived there while prince of Wales.  Is there a floor plan of where these private apartments are?  I assume that the photo on page 1 that shows the garden of Clarence House with main St James's access must be more private apartments and not a part of the complex open to the public.

York House is one wing of the Palace, it overlooks Ambassador's Court and Cleveland Row so must be the rooms highlighted in light blue on this plan. Surprisingly given how many senior royals have lived there it is actually right at the front of the Palace alongside the road and not by the gardens at all.

St. James Palace was constructed by King Henry VIII between 1531 and 1536 in order to serve as his "escape" residence from state duties.
