I will have Clarence House as my main residence, and Lancaster House as my home office  Connie

And now, I sit and wait; for that - apparently - is how one gets to live in these palaces  Roll Eyes

I've always been curious about St. James and never been able to find out much about it. I am loving this thread. Thanks so much, tatty  Star , for starting it.

Thanks for all these pictures. I still get confused with all the palaces and official residences.

I know Prince Charles and family live in Clarence house, but what is the rest of the St James's Palace is used for?
And when they have appartments in SJP, why do Willy and Waity move to Kensington Palace?

Lancaster house is

Lancaster house is

St James's is closed to the public.

The Palace mainly consists of;

Apartments for Princesses Anne, Alexandra and Beatrice.
Administrative offices, the awards and decorations (MBE, Knighthoods etc) department is at St James's
Military accommodation for the officers and soldiers who guard the Palace
The offices of Charles, William, Kate & Harry

The offices of William and Kate are at St James's I think because they will eventually live at Clarence House and so it means continuity for their office. And there might not be adequate space for an office at KP. That's just speculation as I really don't know.

I like the Queen Mother's appartment in blue. Always how I sort of pictured it. I don't think it's all that cluttered. I'm thinking of someone like Cecil Beaton's house.

What can I say? It's good to be royal. Sadly, we're not. *keeps on dreaming*

I was surprised to see a Maori "haka" being performed in one of the pictures. Must have been a state visit from New Zealand. Wink

I thought Princess Anne had rooms at Buckingham Palace.  Also Princess Alexandra lives at Thatched Cottage, in the London suburbs.  Just askin.   Thinking

Anne has her office at Buckingham Palace but her apartment is at St James's.

Alexandra has an odd set-up, she has an apartment at St James's as her official London residence but she seems to live mainly at Thatched House Lodge (considered her private residence), her official engagements and announcements are made from Thatched House Lodge. This is unusual because royals don't usually issue releases from their personal homes. I don't know why this is the case.

Wow!  Thanks!  What amazing pictures.  All my life I though St James's was a single building  Thanks again.  The decor in the various buildings is breathtaking.
