Who among Charles' ex-girlfriends would have made a more suitable match than Diana (leaving out Camilla)? Who came closest to getting the ring before Diana?
I can remember offhand: Lady Jane Wellesley, beautiful and smart and from a grand family if that sort of thing still matters. Excellent match. Lady Sarah Spencer, who would surely have been a better match even though she might have had some of the issues Diana had Sabrina Guinness - gorgeous and confident Anna Wallace, the last before Diana - if she had hung on, Charles would have cracked and produced the ring. She certainly had the character to go for it.

Sabrina Guinness - gorgeous and confident
Yet she is chiefly remembered for her dalliance with the then bachelor Prince Charles, who was much taken by her willowy legs.
However, her flighty nature didn’t go down well at Balmoral, where the smitten Charles had invited her for the weekend. She incurred the Queen’s displeasure by sitting in Queen Victoria’s chair, then she joked that the minibus taking the royal party to a picnic was like a black maria. Prince Philip had replied pointedly: “You’d know all about those.”http://www.express.co.uk/...pard-and-Sabrina-Guinness

Lady Jane Wellesley has always struck me as the one who would have been excellent had he asked her.
Amanda Knatchbull is missing from your list - he did propose to her and she turned him down and within months was engaged to Diana.

How close did Camilla come (originally)?
Was she a fling? We're they in love? Was she not suitable enough??
How long we're they together?

As far as I know, Charlie has always been in love with Cam ever since they met. But Charlie probably hesitated and went away on a navy mission for 6 months, and when he came back, Cam had married ner hubby. That didn't stop their relationship, and as we all know, their love blossomed throughout Charlie and Di marriage.

He was behind pushing her towards Charles. IIRC, he was miffed that Charles turned her down.

He was behind pushing her towards Charles. IIRC, he was miffed that Charles turned her down. My recollections are different - that Amanda Knatchbull knew more about what that job entailed than anyone else, plus that Charles would always be entangled with Camilla (given that she was cheerfully laying down for him throughout her entire marriage, so Amanda sensibly said "thanks, cuz, but....no."

She was never a contender when they were both single. Due to her multiple pre-marital sexual escapades, she wasn't Princess of Wales material. Love? Camilla's too shrewd for that, and Charles too emotionally stunted to experience it. He loves how she caters to him and the reflection of himself that he sees when he views her. I'm sure their relationship makes him feel dashing and wordly and perfect and devil-may-care and sexy and powerful. IMO, she's still a mistress in that he maintains the power and in that she's not an equal - she's made her fortune by a spread of the legs. When they were both single, they weren't together long. Marriage wasn't in the cards, Charles did what he does best (dither) and went away, and Camillers married the perfectly servicable Andrew Parker-Bowles, which allowed her to remain in Charles' circle and in her grasp.

I dunno, I believe that Charlie and Cam are really in love! I like to think that in the merry mess the two of them created they at least love each other.

Beautiful? Not so much ... Charles looked as dull at that times as Wills is looking now. They must be nearly in the same age at this picture.
