He was an interesting person - I mean in that he had many problems which also affect the "common" person.  Alcoholism for instance.  His first engagement, to Princess Olga of Greece (sister of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent) was broken due to his love of drink.  Ingrid of Sweden was apparently able to help him quell that.  His relationship with his brother Knud, who was his heir, suffered from the decision, I believe in 1953 (thought to be precipitated by Queen Ingrid) to change succession from agnatic to cognatic primogeniture.
