Remarkable hairdo

When looking at old pictures of the Belgian Royal Family I often are amazed by the hair of princess Marie-José when she was little.

Later on she would become a beautiful (and groomed) princess and queen of Italy.

But when she was little she had big curly hair, and it seems to me it would be though hair to do something nice with (without hurting Marie José).

I believe Queen Alexandra used hairpieces quite a bit.

I believe Queen Mary did as well.  Many ladies did.  I think Silvia does now, when she has a serious tiara to wear.

I think Vic does too sometimes. There's one Nobel appearance, 2009/2010 where she wore a beige dress and the steel cut tiara I think, where her hairstyle seemingly had more hair than she had at the time. Not that I'm complaining, the Swedish court hairdresser is a genius!

Wasn't it said, that Queen Mary had both a silverish and a golden fringy-bang-piece (you know those tight curled puddle-bangs) that she used for evening and gala-events? And that she came to hate her hairstyle in her later years, but since the King was quite partial of this style, she felt duty-bound to keep it?

She had to dress the same way too.  She wanted to shorten her skirts after WWI and did a test run on a lady in waiting, to see the king's reaction.  It didn't go well, so her skirts stayed long.  Not until after he died did they come up a few inches.

It is amazing to see such snippets of a time in which women were not able to go against their husbands' and fathers' wishes, even in such personal matters as hairstyle or hemline... we all too easily forget that when we rage against some cultures "old-fashioned misogyny" that our own freedom of choice is a mere infant...

I think more or less the same thing happened with the Queen Mum. If you look at her wedding dress, she was quite au courant, but later on, she dressed to please the king, whose tastes were decidedly not for a flapper girl. And maybe some day people will say the same about Kate, about how she once was daring and then became all queen-like in her wardrobe choices.
