With regard to sports: he does a bit of weight training (in Dutch: kracht training, which literally means strengt training)

King WA (and other members of the Oranje-Nassau family) and sports:

https://nos.nl/artikel/22...ander-spant-de-kroon.html

More than a century of sport and the Oranjes: Willem-Alexander takes the lead

'Cheering King' is what the king is often called and that's not for nothing: Willem-Alexander is a great sports fan. It is no surprise that the King's Games - today the seventh edition - have become a tradition since its inauguration. In 2019, sport and the Oranges are inextricably linked. But that has not always been the case.

More than a century of sport and the Oranges: Willem-Alexander takes the lead

'Cheering King' is what the king is often called and that's not for nothing: Willem-Alexander is a great sports fan. It is no surprise that the King's Games - today the seventh edition - have become a tradition since its inauguration. In 2019, sport and the Oranges are inextricably linked. But that has not always been the case.

"The broad interest in sport of the Oranjes started only after the death of Willem III in the 19th century," says sports historian Jurryt van de Vooren. Wilhelmina, only ten years old at the time, must succeed her father. With his way of governing, he had ensured that the Oranges were not popular with the people. "And that is to say the least", says Van de Vooren. "Willem III was also called mad Willem or King Gorilla by his atrocities."

"Sport brings together"

In the eight years that Queen Emma prepared Wilhelmina for her position - she had to be 18 years old before this - she tried to do everything to increase the connection with the people. And sport was a good tool for this. "Sport is becoming a brother, that is one of the main reasons that a royal family member is paying attention to this," says NOS royal reporter Kysia Hekster.

"The most striking thing is the attention that was paid to skating," says Van de Vooren. "Always when it was freezing, the queens themselves took to the ice. Images of this became internationally known and aroused indignation." A queen who put on the skates herself, that was unprecedented.

In the years that Queen Wilhelmina reigned, sport became increasingly important for the Oranges. Simply because sport became increasingly important for the population. These developments continued into the rest of the 20th century.

"More and more sports received royal attention, members of the royal family almost always attended the Olympic Games and royal awards were made for athletes," says Van de Vooren. "The number of royal awards that are given in sports has gained momentum in the 21st century." About 150 ribbons were given from 1900 to 2000. Since then there have been another 150, Van de Vooren estimates.

The big sports fan

King Willem-Alexander nevertheless takes the crown when it comes to the amount of attention that a Dutch monarch devotes to sport. "In the time of Wilhelmina there was the slogan 'for God, homeland and Oranje'. With Willem-Alexander this could be better 'for sport, homeland and Oranje'."

"The king does not shy away from controversial situations to be at the Olympic Games.
Kysia Hekster, NOS royal family reporter ”

The king has a deep-rooted interest in sport. "He prefers to talk about it all day," Hekster knows. He himself participated in the New York Marathon (1992) and the Elfstedentocht (1986) when he was still crown prince.

Willem-Alexander is also an honorary member and former member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He never skips the Olympic Games. "He does not shy away from controversial situations to be there," says Hekster. She refers to the 2014 Olympic Games in Russia, where the king drank a beer with Russian President Putin. For many Dutch people that went down the wrong way.

Given the interest of Willem-Alexander in sports, the creation of the King's Games at his inauguration in 2013 was not a surprising move. But the King's Games are about more than just the king's interest.

"Being overweight is a growing problem in our society," says Van de Vooren. "As a result, sports are becoming increasingly important. Keeping the King's Games, where children come into contact with sports and eating healthily in a fun way, promotes a healthy society."

The King's Games are an expression of this: sports and the Oranjes are indispensable. Hekster: "Nowadays, national sport is more about orange than red, white and blue."

A rough translation:

Van Buren (alias)

Van Buren is a pseudonym used by members of the Dutch royal family to remain incognito.

The surname Van Buren comes from the title of Count van Buren, one of the many titles and names that King Willem-Alexander can use. This county goes back to Anna van Buren, the first wife of Willem van Oranje. Her ancestors from the Van Egmond family gained control of Buren (in the Betuwe) in 1472. Buren became a county in 1498. After the death of the only son of Anna van Buren and Willem van Oranje, Filips Willem, the title count van Buren came into the hands of his half-brother Maurits.

King Willem III called himself Count of Buren. Queen Wilhelmina and Queen Juliana were often incognito as countess van Buren, for example with restaurant reservations.

When King Willem-Alexander rode the Elfstedentocht in 1986, he did it under the name W.A. van Buren, an inconspicuous name. Only during the journey did he become known who he really was

Buren:
https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buren_(stad)
The place is located in the Neder (Lower) Betuwe region and is centrally located within the municipality of Buren, near the larger towns of Tiel and Geldermalsen in the Netherlands.

Buren can call itself Oranjestad, because of the bond with the Dutch royal family. Willem van Oranje married Anna van Buren there in 1551. Princess Beatrix and King Willem-Alexander are therefore countess and count of Buren.

In Buren was one of the largest castles in the Netherlands the house Buren, whose last resident was Frederik Hendrik, prince of Orange.
