King Albert’s appeal to Court of Cassation to be discussed today

Former King Albert II of Belgium’s appeal against the order to undergo a DNA-test will be discussed today by the Court of Cassation, the main court of last resort in Belgium.

He had been ordered to undergo a DNA-test in order to determine if he is the father of Delphine Boël. He took the test in May 2019 after facing a 5,000 euro a day penalty for refusing to take the DNA-test. However, the results have remained a secret until the verdict of the appeal is in.

Delphine Boël was “relieved” after her supposed father decided to finally take a DNA-test in her paternity case.

Delphine was born in 1968 as the daughter of Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps and was officially recognised by her mother’s husband Jonkheer Jacques Boël (of which the English equivalent would be Esquire). The King made a reference to a crisis ‘thirty years ago’ in the 1999 Christmas speech but has otherwise remained silent on the subject. Delphine Boël has always claimed that it was not about any inheritance, as her legal father is much richer than the King.

In 2013, Delphine summoned King Albert and two of his children, the Duke of Brabant, now King Philippe, and Princess Astrid of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este to court in hopes of obtaining DNA for testing purposes. The King enjoyed immunity at the time, but his abdication in July 2013 opened the way for a new procedure. The former King of the Belgians was part of a great deal of Delphine’s childhood but has wanted nothing to do with her for the past 20 years. He has also refused to appear in court.

It is looking likely that King Albert will not win his appeal and that the court will order the results of the DNA-test to be made public. The verdict on the appeal is expected on 13 December.

You know he's her father or else he'd be singing from the rooftops if the test showed he wasn't. He's a disgraceful excuse for a human being, a spoiled and warped ex-playboy who found God only when it was convenient for him in old age.

This is all such an amazing story my goodness this poor woman and what she has gone through I hope justice comes. Not to be morose or bury people prematurely but when the old king dies it will be interesting to see how Philippe reacts and if he invites this woman to the funeral or if she is goes to the reception but out of the camera view.

I kind of wonder why she is pursuing the case like a terrier. As she said, there is no financial gain, her reputation is in the gutters, she is suffering from all sorts of repressive measures by the court and there is really nothing to gain.

She is the victim in this scenario, let's not forget. After being allowed to develop something of a relationship with Albert he totally abandoned her with no explanation. What a confusing thing for a child to go through! Once she was old enough to realize the reason she was abandoned I think she had her own value system and what Albert did to her outraged her and rightfully so IMO. She's not after money, though I hope she sues him, she's after a sense of justice and moral retribution for the chaos he caused in her life.

I think it's the case of knowing that you're right and wanting it to be stated and not be called a liar.

Don’t blame her a bit either. The thing is, he could’ve just done the DNA test years ago and saved his family a lot of trouble (I doubt he cares about Delphine’s trouble at all). If she’s right, just fess up, apologize, and no one would really care that much. Albert has made this situation way worse by dragging it out for so long.
