I don't know what it is about Elisabeth but she comes across to me as a very, very sad child/young girl. It looks like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. You barely ever see her happy or laughing. A very serious child in my opinion. Not sure if I have to find that a good thing or a bad thing.

She reminds me so much of her great grandmother Queen Astrid.

They look like a very happy family to me Smiley
Yes, P&M look like they have been very hands-on parents. Hope that doesn't have to change now.

Lovely happy photos.  Jumping Thumb up
I'm glad they took the time to have their holiday in France.
The children will notice a difference in family time, possibly, now that Philippe is King.
The reality of becoming a monarch would have to be dawning on Elisabeth.

Thanks LS! Gotta get warmed up for Graasten.

I think that brooch is Fabiola's "waterfall" brooch that Mathilde started wearing in 2011.

Thank you! It reminds me of a brooch that my Mum had in the 80s which I loathe. Although if hers had been diamond I could have found a way to love it.

Ditto. The Belgian royal kids seem very sweet.

I think she's a spitting image of Philippe.

I noticed she seemed especially unsmiling taking these photos but prior to this she'd always struck me as serious but not sad. Rough day, maybe.

Mathilde isn't icy, she is DIGNIFIED!

THIS is to me how a Queen is supposed to act and express herself in an official portrait!

Tgb  Thumb up
Apart from her father and mother's roles increasing to King and Queen, the talk of Albert's potential illegitimate daughter would have to have crossed the mind of Elisabeth and the other older grandchildren.
That revelation could be difficult for a kid to process.   Huh?
If Albert and Paola were stressed or sad, that too would be obvious to the grandchildren.

Mathilde and Philippe slip nicely onto a stamp - like ducks to water.
There seems to be no pretense with Mathilde; she is naturally regal and considerate.
I hope there is still time to devote to her adorable family.

I think Elisabeth just has a naturally serious face. She has probably has a bit of a confusing time lately for the reasons Cloaked mentioned. But even  as a newborn and around her 1st birthday she looked soooo serious.

If she isn't smiling her natural expression looks sad. But when she smiles she looks much more childlike and I love how tightly she holds onto Phillipe.

One thing I figured, Mathilde can sometimes have good-bordering-on-great leg/feet extensions.
For some unexplainable reason, that's what I thought anyway.

Like the one in the bronze/gold dress far left.

IMO, Mathilde is the most beautiful Queen in the world right now. Next to Queen Rania and Queen Jetsun Pema.
