Even though expected, I am sure Friso's death is still painful and heartbreaking to the family. My condolences to the family. RIP Friso and may his family also find comfort and peace.

It must be a relief  in the worst way. Now his widow and children will know their place in life. They will be able to move forward knowing the name of their grief and having the opportunity, at last, of saying goodbyes and beginning a new life. Not the one they, or anyone else , would choose, but at last the fundamentals of their life are set. No longer in limbo, tragic though it is, all the Dutch Royal Family can support each other united in grief, knowing deep in their hearts that one day, sooner for some than others, they will be able to smile again.

A BBC article said that Wax & Max were in Greece on vacation when he passed. Must have been somewhat sudden.

I want to make it clear that I don't fault them for vacationing at all. I had a loved one who was on that downward spiral for a long time & we traveled the years they were on the downward. Thankfully there were signs that they were near the end so we could stay close but I know not everyone is that lucky.

That's very eloquent, J. I'm so glad they have a loving family to support each other.

As inevitable as it was, a sad ending for a sad story...
My heart goes out for his family, especially those little girls that now have to grow up without a father...

It is very sad.  At least he got to die in his home country.  RIP Friso.

- Ugh, I just read that Sunday was Mabel's birthday and Friso died on Monday morning.  My heart bleeds for her and their kids.

Quote
THE HAGUE, Netherlands) —  Johan Friso, the bespectacled Dutch prince who avoided the limelight and gave up his position in line to the throne after getting entangled in a scandal with his bride-to-be, died Monday — 18 months after a skiing accident that left his brain gravely injured. He was 44.

The royal house said the prince, known as Friso, died of complications from the accident, without giving more details. It said he had never regained more than “minimal consciousness.”

Friso was struck by an avalanche while skiing off-trail in Lech, Austria, Feb. 17, 2012, and was buried until rescuers pulled him from the snow, unconscious, 20 minutes later. He was resuscitated at the scene and flown to a hospital, but remained in coma for months.

Until the dramatic incidents in Lech, Friso, the second of the former Queen Beatrix’s three sons, had sometimes been known as “Prince Brilliant.” He studied at UC Berkeley, the Technical University of Delft and Erasmus University at Rotterdam, graduating from the Dutch universities cum laude with degrees in engineering and economics. He later earned an MBA at France’s prestigious INSEAD school of business.

Very grievous news.  Sad The family has suffered so long of this hopeless situation. I'm sure as they are an united family, they'll be able to comfort each other and find of the heart.
