The Rurik dynasty was begun by the Varangian prince Rurik (830-879).
Rurikn dynasty monarchs ruled Kievan Rus and later the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Some Rurik monarchs became Tsars of Russia.

Interesting!  I had never heard of the Rurik Dynasty.  So this is what was going on in the Ukraine and Russia at about the time the Saxons were dealing with the Vikings and then the Normans.

Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev married Emperor Basil II's sister Anna. Returning to Kiev, Vladimir destroyed pagan monuments. He established many churches, starting with a church dedicated to St. Basil and the Church of the Tithes.

Maria Temryukovna was the second spouse of Tsar Ivan IV. Ivan soon came to regret the decision to marry her, on account of his new wife being viewed as illiterate and vindictive.
