The problem with MM was that she cried "wolf" way too often. There are several aspects

(1) She has been caught out lying a few times. Pulling sickies and turning up at private events/ holidays. Once she cancelled a trip to South America three (!) weeks beforehand claiming to have infection. She stated fear of flying which never stopped her from exciting oversea trips.

(2) Work load - she gives the impression she is work shy (has kind of a bit improved lately) - her 80 year old inlaws work way more than she does. Maybe her PR team coped on cause it got a bit better - but there were years when she had the flu from October - April or at least you had the impression it was that lenghth of time (again, it never stopped her holidaying).

(3) Level of professionalism - her in laws also have a more professional level - e.g. work clothes - Sonia rarely gets it wrong, MM rarely gets it right. She went to college and took all these courses ... what for? She was a single mom on social welfare and could relate - but doesn't. I remember on the "take your bike to work day" when she was snapped checking her messages on the mobile while cycling and the day she turned up at an event with a coffee to go (impact on environment? tacky? rude towards the hosts?) Plus - once she was a crown princess they went to London for two years (surely not the cleverest move) - and whatever she did there, her work has not profited from that. Or remember when she ran Hakoon down publicly for not reading as much as she does.

(4) Credibility - I liked her when she first came on the scene but she has let me down so many times that I don't longer care for her. It is hard to know what she stands for if she uses her privileges as a private person to fly to India and pick up two babies that a surrogate mother carried for her two gay friends - just to turn up weeks later as a conference aiming at exploitation of women in the third world.

To me she seems arrogant a lot of times, selfish, not caring about her job, seeing herself as an intellectual  (and dressing accordingly) and not caring much about anything else than her well-being and her circle of friends. Sadly as a crown princess a total fail. If she is sick now she might be really sick or pretended sick - makes no difference that she does not do her job right.

I'm Norwegian myself, and I'm above average interested in the royal family, so I believe that I've followed her quite closely over her years in the Norwegian RF. MM and Haakon married how many years ago??? Still, the only work I'm aware that she stands behind is literature /the literature train, young leaders and mental health. Not much to brag of, considering she's been a princess for almost 20 years.

I can only agree to everything Miss Marple said, because that's how I feel as well. She's work shy and she takes no interest in her work. Compared to her MIL she's such a disaster. Honestly, I never liked MM, I had a hunch that someone with that much lack of character and vision, couldn't step up her game to the amount needed for this role.

Surely one shouldn't judge someone only based on their past, but when you're 28 years old and seem to have no passions and no ambitions, that speaks for itself. So, unlike many, I never had any real hopes for her.

To be fair, she has been nominated several times to help the Danish Royal Family out by rescuing/looking after Mary at various events. That would be very hard work!

Lucky she is not still struggling as a single mother on a waitress wage, eh? It would have been very hard for her to hold down a normal job for all these years.
I hope there is nothing seriously wrong, of course, but she has worked very lightly for the last 20 years.

That first sentence of yours really made me chuckle.

and partying abroad ...alone ?
Shades of his Danish cousin and counterpart there...(last year at the Burning Man)

They're not joined at the hip as far as I'm concerned.

But the difference is that Derf is likely cheating (we're well aware of his predilection for pretty blondes) and has for years, Haakon has kept whatever indiscretions discreet. In either case, while I generally don't sanction or encourage cheating, I wouldn't blame either one of them.

The press is pretty easy on the Scandinavian royals (in other country Fred wouldn't have gotten away with so many things, and all the blondes we don't know), but the Norwegian royals have the easiest ride of them all. Haakon could have had hundreds of affairs with much less discretion than Fred, and we wouldn't know a thing because most of their private time they're left to their own devices (Not that I'm saying he has had affairs)

In any case it's odd that the husband is partying in another continent while the wife is going to undergo a mysterious surgery (where else would the press allow this uninformative press release from their royals?) and needs to take sick leave.

I thought that was odd too. No surgery is 100% safe and it seems strange to me that Haakon wouldn't stick around for it. I can't help but feel that if this had happened pre M-M's affair he would have been in Norway.

Completely agree with you re the press too. Yes

In view of MM's diagnosis in the news in the last 24 hours, if she had been busting her butt a la Leti or Mathilde when they were CPs, I'd have given her more of a pass and have more feels about it. However, I'm going to quote Miss M's post from March:

The problem with MM was that she cried "wolf" way too often. There are several aspects

(1) She has been caught out lying a few times. Pulling sickies and turning up at private events/ holidays. Once she cancelled a trip to South America three (!) weeks beforehand claiming to have infection. She stated fear of flying which never stopped her from exciting oversea trips.

While the pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis is potentially (and likely) devastating, and while I wish her no personal ill, I can't get too sad or upset beyond a 'holy hell, that's a shitty diagnosis that I wouldn't wish on anyone.'

I am far more concerned for IA and Sverre, even for Marius (who is now an adult and on his own), and feel bad for Haakon. Haakon's getting to a point in life that losing one or both of his parents in the next ten years are pretty much guaranteed, and now he has to cope with his wife's potentially fatal diagnosis, and increasingly elderly parents, while keeping his shit together for his kids.

That might make me seem cold hearted, but of that crop of CPs, she's always rubbed me the wrong way and nothing will really ever change that.

I am no MM fan. She has always come across as rather arrogant and unlikable, IMO. But, of course, this piece of news breaks my heart for her and her loved ones. Poor her and her family Sad

Obviously we have no inside information but for years she skipped so many events (but never her regular holidays) and turned up at fun events that I don't think she has been affected by this for a very long time. I might be wrong ... It is more the last few months you had the feeling there is something going on ...

Well, with such a devastating disease, I can't see her able to bust her butt like Leti or Maxima or Mathilde..........
I was never a fan of MM, but I could never blame her for not working as much as other CPs after knowing her health problems
