cause otherwise she would have worked? oh well: Crown Princess Mette-Marit had to cancel all her appointments this week because of a neck prolapse that’s been an ongoing problem, confirmed the Royal Palace on Tuesday. She’s been put on sick leave for the next two weeks, and it may be extended. The painful ailment means Mette-Marit will also drop out of the crown couple’s long-planned official visit to Finland on October 22-23. Her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, will now travel to Finland alone.
“The crown princess will try to carry out some arrangements if the sick leave period is extended,” palace spokeswoman Marianne Hagen told state broadcaster NRK. She was supposed to take part in a literature tour on board a train from Bodø in Northern Norway to Værnes, outside Trondheim, this week. The idea was to fill the train with books and ride from stop to stop along the Nordlandsbanen route to promote literature. That had to be dropped as well.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit did manage to make an appearance at last week’s quick “friendship visit” from the new King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, whose mother recently abdicated, and his wife, Queen Maxima. Norway’s crown couple met them at the airport on Wednesday, escorted them into Oslo and joined in a luncheon hosted at the palace by King Harald and Queen Sonja.
Mette-Marit has already been dropped from the palace’s official program for the next few weeks, though. In Finland, Haakon will now meet Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö alone, in a visit meant to “focus on the close cooperation” between Finland and Norway. well now she actually has an excuse hope It's not serious get well soon At least she will try, poor baby.

It appears that the "neck prolapse" is not getting any better and MM's sick leave is now extended to December.

These things can take a very long time to heal, and MM is probably in constant extreme pain. In 2011 I suffered three Spinal disc prolapses, I went through two operations, sat in a wheelchair, and was on sick leave for six months. It took two years to heal. Then two weeks ago a physiotherapist wanted to do something magical to my back that was supposed to alleviate the last remnants of pain. Well....something went wrong and before I knew it I feelt a familiar kind of extreme pain. I'm now back on sick leave and in a wheelchair. I have nothing but sympathy for Mette-Marit and I hope she get's well soon.

"She isn´t wearing ANYTHING", said a young child
The empress shuddered, for she knew that they were right, but she thought, "The procession must go on!" She carried herself even more proudly, and the chamberlains walked along behind carrying the train that wasn't there.

The neck area is extremely sensible and I have seen cases of neck manipulation that produced strokes. Problem is that the head is actually much too heavy to be worn like that, really, going bipedal was a great idea, I grant you that, but evolution missed a really perfect (or in many cases workable) solution what to do with the heavy head held up. On second thought it is amazing that MM also has this problem. Next we hear Mary's head was too top heavy. ANyway I wish you a speedy and total recovery...

Wow! I hadn't expected to get these kind words from my fellow dishers. Thanks it is very much appreciated. I'm sad to hear that you have the same kind of troubles cordtx, my sympathies to you. @fairy I agree, in my experience physiotheraphy has been very unhelpful and my gut feeling told me I shouldn't receive treatment from a physiotherapist again, but go figure I did it anyway. I have found chirotheraphy somewhat helpful though.

Thank you for the advice fairy. I had actually never heard of Osteopathy, but last night I read about it and it certainly sounds like something that could be good for me and my fragile back.

I think sometimes people find it easy to criticize someone with a health problem that doesn't appear to be serious from the outsider's perspective. But once they know the facts, it's a whole other ball game.
I have really bad osteoarthritis -- ruined my knees in ballet so many years ago -- walk with a cane, and have what I call a ``crip card'' that entitles me to park in handicapped zones. If I had a nickel for every person who has said to me ``oh, you're so lucky. I wish I had one of those cards,'' I'd probably never need to work again. Try walking around with my crappy knees for 10 minutes and then you'll see just how ``lucky'' I am.
So I have great sympathy for Mette-Marit. Plus, she's always been pretty active outdoors with Haakon and the kids. It must really be taking a toll for her to have to be out of commission.

I suspect the criticism / sceptism of MM has nothing to do with ignorance of her condition. No-one here is stupid.
It's perhaps more related to the fact that, in the past, MM has been ill when it comes to work but always buoyant and capable when it comes to partying / holidaying / having fun.
For those not familiar, the scepticism around MM is a manifestation of the Aesop fable, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'.
When she is genuinely ill, the natural response is 'Yeah, heard that one before'. It has nothing to do with her condition as such which, we are all smart and capable people who recognise genuine illness, is debilitating.
