No way those diamonds came from a historic piece. That brooch/necklace was QEQM’s which was given to her by Queen Mary as a wedding gift.

I agree. This went back into the vault after Diana's death.

The article said it was given as a gift so I’m sure William or Harry have it.

Heirloom gifts like these come with strings attached. They are more like lifetime loans. At most it might have been earmarked for use by whoever William married.

By staying part of the royal jewel collection passed from monarch to monarch it thus avoids death duties.

Haz would certainly not have been given permission to pry two diamonds from its setting.

A close-up of her hands from Thursday’s engagement showed her wearing four rings: two diamond eternity bands, the new eternity ring with colored gems, and her Welsh gold wedding ring.

I thought that too. One of the diamond bands (hard to tell which) she has had for a long time and wore it alongside big blue. I don’t particularly like the top band, I don’t think it matches well with the other two.

As speculated, I don’t think we will see much of big blue moving forward, maybe only for special occasions.

I like the eternity band much better than Big Blue. It should have been retired when Diana died, it's clunky, dated, and a reminder of a not so happy union. The eternity band is fresh and symbolic of much happier sentiments.

Secret It will never happen until more time has passed, but the ring would make a lovely clasp on a nice string of pearls. Plenty of them in the vault from what I understand.

It would be wonderful for Charlotte or George's future wife.

I just think it has outlived it's usefulness as an engagement ring.

Yes! Does Charlotte have blue eyes? (Can't remember.) Thst would be nice necklace clasp for her on one of her significant birthdays (18, 21) or used on state occasions, if she attends those.

Charlotte and Louis have green eyes, Charlotte more green and Louis more hazel.

IIRC the big blue has always looked too big for Kate's finger. Maybe this is the set she wears at home? I definitely think her not wearing the big blue is due to the effects of her treatment, but in a weird way if she is wanting to wear this set from now on rather than the big blue, it's timed well- people will connect the change to her treatment rather than speculating on the state of their marriage (those Rose rumours sadly persist as I found out this week). Thinking about the big blue I can't imagine it on a middle aged or older person, to me it's a very young person's ring. Maybe the change in set is also Kate's signal that she's entering a new chapter in her life.

I think often as women age, their taste in jewelry changes. I can't begin to count the number of women I know who, once they hit a certain age, `traded in'' their engagement rings for something simpler.  Often they are women who have a more active lifestyle and don't want or need a big bauble on their hands, getting in the way of everything.  Makes perfect sense to me. I have more or less quite wearing rings with set-in stones and content myself with much simpler bands. Got tired of getting bread dough on the engagement ring every time I baked bread and kneaded the dough.

You could also just take off your rings when you prepare food. That would definitely be a hygienic and easy solution..

Big Blue will always be associated with Diana, it is nice for Kate she has a ring for herself, with no previous association. The eternity band is lovely and more keeping with her understated style.

Kate has, regretfully, never seemed to enjoy jewelry so I'm not surprised she's finally wearing something more suited to her personal tastes.

It doesn't give me much hope for the vaults once she is queen. I think she will hardly bring out anything new.

I have a ring holder on my kitchen counter for my engagement ring and wedding band. It feels odd to cook with rings on.

I can see Kate wearing the Girs of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. She will probably stay away from the larger tiaras as they won't suit her, and that's fine.

But she absolutely must, must wear the Vladimir tiara with the emeralds to a very prominent occasion at leas once.
