Yes, it's short for Archibald. I'm clueless why he would say that was his name, though.

I find the use of nicknames a bit confusing because we don’t really use them in Denmark, at least not so systematically as they seem to be in English speaking countries Blush

Yes my father was known by Dick during his professional life
His name is Richard. It’s sometimes quite confusing here too.
