I think it's both good and bad to go to school where there's been a family tradition. My youngest daughter was in the third generation from our family to attend a particular private school. And she was the last of eight members of her generation. She got really tired of being recognized as ``oh, another one from the XX family. Well . . . .'' At the same time she also liked being recognized for the same reasons. And yes, when the grands started arriving, off they went to the same school as well. It's a family tradition.
Australia has similar. Only, our “private” schools are a spectrum from tiny, very poor Catholic schools to the expensive high-society ones. In a country town you’ll easily see multiple generations attending the same under-resourced church school. It’s amusing when people talk about their “private school education” when the local public school is far better on all fronts. So in Australia there’s no bragging rights unless you know whether it’s high Anglican Shore, or non-denominational Ascham the person went to - or St Jude’s in Lambing Flat. 😺

I guess families have to tour and apply three years out to go to Eton. Looks like the Wales are playing by the rules which is why they are touring so early.

ANDREW DENTON: Yes. What did... When you first met, what did you see in each other? CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK: What did we see in each other? We saw... Well, it's a bit hard. It's a bit blurry, in a way, because it was just after the Olympics had started and it was one of those evenings where...

I believe though, that Bumbershoot has us all beat - she remembers HLM's coronation. I am in awe! I am wondering if George's going to Eton is set in stone or if they are also considering other schools.

It doesn't matter how old you get, buying snacks for a road trip should always look like an unsupervised 9-year-old was given $100. Anonymous

I was thinking of her… I understand that it was a presentation visit and there are still two or three years before he would start there or in another school of their choice.

Eton's admissions requirements state that the prospective students must visit the school during Year 5 in order to have their names submitted. I believe that the Wales will try to choose the best school for each of their three children's own needs.

Yup, I'm truly ancient. I do remember the late queen's coronation and how incredibly excited I was. And of course Charles' early educational ventures. I remember how timid he looked in photos when he was shipped off to Gordonstoun and I can remember photos of him greeting his parents at the train when he was just a little guy clearly in his granny's orbit. But then my grandson-the-eldest just got his MBA last week so there we go . . . .
Hoping that Eton is the right place for George. I hope he's academically able and that he will flower in a place like Eton. He does seem to be a bit on the shy and introspective side like his grandfather, so I bet Charles can be a good emotional support for him through the rigors of late childhood and early adolescence. Not that I know from any real-life experience, but I've certainly read enough books about the British boarding schools for boys to know that big social challenges away, particularly for any child who is different for any reason. Being second in line for the throne is a HUGE difference from one's peers.

that’s awesome bumber! i remember my mom and grandma making me get up to watch the wedding of Charles and Diana ( i think i was 10) you’ll. want tell your children and grandchildren you watched it.
i also remember my grandma remarking how “ scandalous “ it was for a 19 year old to be marrying a 30 something year old man and i wondered what the problem was. They were both “ so old” who cared.

I wondered about Eton. It’s where all the future prime ministers and parliament people seem to go so if George is going to be a future leader, it seems like that is the place to be. But I also thought they would break the mold and go Co-ed so he and Charlotte could go together.
As I understand it going to Eton is a Spencer family tradition so it might have a very personal meaning to William besides him maybe, possibly, probably having liked going there.
