Whoa…in this article from 1964 (right before their marriage), a lot of really interesting things are revealed about C & AM.

Sounds like both Frederika and Ingrid knew that the monarchy would most likely be overthrown.

I've always assumed that Frederica pushed Constantine to marry AM.  I don't think he minded marrying her, but he certainly didn't do it for love.  I don't know that I think Ingrid was all that enthusiastic - I think she and Frederik were both concerned about how young AM was.  But I'm sure it was nice to know she'd be Queen.  Although I have read that the fact that it was Greece - which had a history of back and forth with its monarchy was a concern.

What blew me away was the mention of the rumor that Harald of Norway was in love with Margrethe.  Of course he wasn't, but I'm shocked that that was even a rumor.  I've never read that before, and I'm not sure I buy that it was ever said anywhere else, because surely that would have been quite a big deal and quite a concern to the Danes, who would have lost their heir.

You're welcome! Star  I'd never read anything like this about AM before, and I was shocked by this article.  It sounds like she went from being a child (the room with teddy bears and dolls) to an adult overnight.  It doesn't sound like she was ever really a teen.

I really wish AM would write a tell-all autobiography. Yes

An autobiography sure would be interesting. I wonder, if knowing how things were going to end up, would she still have married Constantine? That being said, I can't really think of other options as to who she would have married.

I'm surprised that they didn't try to set Benedikte up with Constantine.  AM was so young at that time, and Benny was of a more marriageable age. Thinking

I don't think they were interested in setting any daughter up with Constantine, given that the Greek monarchy wasn't the most stable.  I've read that Ingrid and Benedikte had an eye to Harald of Norway, but of course he had taken up with some commoner. Wink  And I don't think they ever had much time to think about anything else for AM because she fell for Constantine so early, but I've always though Carl Gustaf might have been a logical choice, age-wise.

........................AM and Carl Gustaf are first cousins, so that would not be an option. Queen Ingrid and Carl Gustaf's father were brother and sister.

^ That is true. But first cousin marriages (and uncle/niece) have been very common in royal history,
so I don't see what prevented such a match.
AFAIK Constantine and Anne-Marie were very much in love, and wanted to be married. Both Frederik IX and queen Ingrid were displeased with the match because they feelt that their daughter was to young.
That's what I've always heard, but I might just be a victim of DRF propaganda. Who knows? Wink

I may be making it up, but I think Benedikte met Richard and they fell in love but had to wait to marry him until Margrethe got married - thus some speculating that Marge and Henri was an arranged couple. AM was allowed to marry early because he was a proper royal Whistle

Anne-Marie is proof that a girl should not always marry her first love.

Only if she regrets her choice.

I wonder if this played a part in Margrethe and Henrik allowing Joachim to marry before his older brother?
