Hey, I can finally write!

Well, well... I loved the dress and I think it really suited Theodora's bodytype! She was so sweet, so unbelievably happy, she was glowing!!!!

I get something sketchy from the groom... very shady. Someone mentioned camera-hungry eyes and I agree. That was my thought as well.

I have all the dish for you - or part of it.

First of all, the prewedding party took place aat the Byzantine Museum, yes. There was strong opposition from members of the parliament and other left-ish organizations because State's Museum shouldn't be given for private celebrations (although the law changed recently and the museums now are not exactly state's) and because the official document which was signed by the Minister of Culture mentions Anne Marie as Queen of Hellenes - but in danish, in an attempt to shade the fact that the Greek State used a title that no longer exists in Greece and Greek people has denied it years ago. It would became a scandal but it was covered.

Second of all, they danced a certain song in said party - Δραπετσώνα (Drapetsona) - written by two people who were loudly and clearly against monarchy (music by Mikis Theodorakis, lyrics by Tassos Livaditis). The song reports the violent actions by the government and the king in the 1960 when they decided to demolish the shacks, shanties (I googled this, I've never used the word before so I hope it's making sense) in Drapetsona area without giving compensation to the people living there. It's a song based on historical events, it's a song that talks about the difficulties Greek people faced because of the monarchy.

How they were so naive to put it in their royal wedding... It's an insult. I like the family, I've said it before, but they need to dive in Greek culture and history before they parade themselves as Greeks.

Here's the song (sung by the great Grigoris Bithikotsis) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoVCJmId5TU
In the video you  can see how the place used to be during the 30s' and how it looks today.

Here's the video of them dancing... https://www.instagram.com...&utm_campaign=loading
This is not at all the way this song should be danced. They could have taken proper dance classes, it's not that they cannot afford it.  Roll Eyes

Thanks onar. What a story about the dance and its origins. Yikes. Wasn't Theodora's grandmother a real figure of controversy and maybe even involved in some of those devastating decisions in postwar Greece? They look like amateurs dancing you have to wonder why they didn't take lessons.

Thank you too Onar about your report, it sounds a bit weird and also embarrassing.

I never really understood why they are still clinging so much to their Greek heritage, because they aren't completely Greek as we all know. Most of them haven't even lived there.

The grandmother that periwinkle is referring to must be Frederica of Hanover, a very controversial and not much loved person. Opinions differ about the past, who was treated more badly, the royal family or the people of Greece. I tend to be on the side of the Greek people. They didn't abolish their monarchy for nothing.

Well I went down a rabbit hole because I was interested in more on the story of Drapetsona. It seemed to be the victim of a kind of urban renewal movement and that's kind of what people were doing then but if the residents had no recourse or right of return then that is not well done. Here are the lyrics to the song. I know most Greeks don't care about the royals and for sure some of the reactions to them are over done but it's maybe a little tone deaf to choose this song especially because the site of the reception is down the way from Drapetsona. There were other and better songs for the couple to choose I'm sure.

Built with blood, every stone and sorrow

every nail is bitterness and sob

but when we were returning in the evening from work

I and she dreams and kisses

The wind and the rain beat it

but it was port and hug and  the sweetest hope

ah, our little house, and this one had soul

Take our wreath, take our geranium

in Drapetsona we don’t have life anymore

hold my hand and let’s go my star

we will live even though we are poor

A little bed and a cradle in the corner

on the leaking roof stars and birds

each of its door sweat and sigh

each of its window a sky

But when the night was coming

in the narrow alley the kids were having fun

ah, our little house, and this one had heart

Take our wreath, take our geranium

in Drapetsona we don’t have life anymore

hold my hand and let’s go my star

we will live even though we are poor

Maybe it was an impromptu choice  done by the musicians in a bit of shade .. ?  I can't imagine Theodora, still less Matthew Kumar knowing anything about the orgins of this song - all they heard/knew (probably) was recognizably Greek music.

I went down the rabbit hole of looking back at Theodora's insta and found a pic she took of a plane ticket from a few years ago - in the name part it was written as Theodora / PrincessHRH - even if I was that fussed about my royal title for a monarchy that no longer exists I couldn't imagine having the energy to use it on tickets. Just seems odd to me (though I get that the ticket will have to match her passport but thats a whole other story)

Cousin wise I know having over 20 cousins myself that I was close to a number of them when we were younger and our parents were often together for events, weekends etc but as we grew up we drifted apart because we made our own friendships. Whilst not always true sometimes cousins are friends because its convenient to have a play mate while the grownups are friends - that doesn't translate into a lifelong friendship.

I suspect if the wedding had been in London or even the UK more widely some of the Brits would have attended.

I have never understood the desire to tell them what nationality they have or haven’t got the right to feel Huh?

Constantine was obviously Greek. Regardless of his behaviour he lost his throne but not his Greekness. How could he loose the later?

AM was Danish (or if you want to pick apart her background: party Swedish-English-German-Danish). But the children were not raised like Danes, there were raised like Greeks. In Greece, in Rome, in England, in the US. Like many refugee families because that’s what they are. We can mock them, blame them, scorn them but they fled during the night, leaving their home and things afraid for their lives and lost everything, including a baby.

Their choices now can seem silly and odd and stupid and it definitely seems they’re out of touch with current Greece and the Greeks but they absolutely have the right to feel Greek.

Well said Maria. I think Constantine was clear that he understood that he can serve only at the will of the people so even he got it but yes he was Greek and a proud one. I know some members of the diaspora over here and they carry Greece in their hearts like you can't even believe. They still go to church together and make sure their children go to Greek school etc. I would imagine this is a natural and normal identity for the five children.

Did AM have a miscarriage when they left Greece?

She supposedly had a few between Nikolaos and Theodora, hence the 14 year age gap.

Yes. According to Constantine she was pregnant when they fled.

Peri, thank you for posting the lyrics!
It has really deep meaning and amazing melody.

Of course they can feel as Greeks as they like - I agree with Maria, but when it comes to their public image and when they want to combine it so hard with their greek origins, they ought to be more careful. They got caught without having done their homework.

I cannot understand how a counselor (or an assistant, or whatever they have) allow this to happen. I don't believe Theodora knew the song. Her father maybe did. Someone suggested them this song and I cannot help but think that this person wanted to expose them. Or they have a useless assistant. Or they simply didn't give a sh*t  - which is the worst scenario.
