Always found it interesting how common and popular beards were for English royals born in the 19th century up to the generation that came in the late 1880s and early 1890s and on eschewed beards and went clean shaven. The Duke of Gloucester was the only one of his brothers to grow facial hair and his was only a mustache.
Even their continental peers--no beard for Olav of Norway, nor the 4 Swedish princes, Leopold and Charles of Belgium. Beards definitey went off trend after the first world war!
