And Tatler STILL has the errors --it's Penny's GRANDson, not great-grandson!

Philip Zeigler wrote his official biography, and there's a LOT of naval and Indian political stuff in it.  "The First Mountbattens," about his parents, is very good and not so dry.

And even though Princess Alice was technically never a Mountbatten (marrying long before the family name change), there are some good biographies on her out there. When I get home I'll look at my bookshelf.

There's really only one on Alice, by Hugo Vickers.

"Daugther of Empire" My life as a Mountbatton

That was written by Patricia Mountbatton. it is actually the story of her youth when her father was living in India. I read it, but was a bit disappointed, nevertheless interesting to read her point of view and experiences. Being so privileged and seeing everything what happened there thru the eyes of the upper classes.

I felt the same. I was really excited to read this book but it wasn't exciting at all. Anne Glenconner did a better job of describing a similar time period.

Are you referring to "Lady in Waiting"? If you can recommend it, I would order it for my kindle.

I finished "Lady in waiting" this morning. It reads pretty well, but overall I got some Stockholm Syndrome vibes from Lady Glenconner life. She was just a doormat for her nasty husband and equally nasty Princess Margaret and seems to be justifying this throughout the book.

Lady in waiting is a splendid book - there has been a more recent on by Anne Glenconner called "whatever next" that has had extracts serialised in one of the newspapers which is altogether rather more difficult and dark - very bad life she had with Colin her husband
