I do think the consort role makes all the difference though. QE2 was certainly regal and didn’t attain a comfortable/old shoe status, nor did she aim for that, either. Her consort did present more of an “Everyman” style with his jokes, laughter, etc.
KC3 is more standoffish, less attainable. There is something very “Kinglike” about that. Cam does present the more attainable balance to Charles.

Visiting France in the midst of the massive demonstrations against the pension changes certainly conjures some awkward precedents from French history. Yes I think having a grand royal state visit to France is not the most appropriate of events to take place, considering. It could further polarise support for the monarchy as this kind of event amidst a crisis would remind people that the monarchy is an outdated and out of touch concept. |

This is the sensible decision given the size and intensity of yesterday's protests. Charles and Camilla attending a state dinner and "visit[ing] an organic vineyard" in Bordeaux while all this is going on would have been the height of tone-deafness.

Definitely a good decision. I believe the state dinner was going to be at Versailles, which I would've loved to see just because it would be beautiful, but a very bad look with the current protests. |

LOL, I kind of imagine Camilla doing the happy dance around the palace. Free weekend - when she had prepared for packing, briefing and such - probably going up to her place for a bit of a breather... after all it is unplanned spare time...

Postponing the visit is the best decision for now. The next weeks are going to be a little bit chaotic in France I'm afraid  This visit could be rescheduled for the summer from what I've read today. |

Grand reception with firsts for King Charles in Germany

There won't be two horses waiting for him. Such a thing was only reserved for his mother Queen Elizabeth. But King Charles will be the first monarch to address the German Bundestag tomorrow. It shows how important the British king and the German Federal President consider their mutual relationship.
Charles' visit to Germany, which begins today, is his first official state visit as king. He was actually supposed to visit France first, but that visit was canceled due to the unrest in the country.
The trip is seen as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the UK and the EU after the turbulent Brexit. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Charles's visit as a European gesture.
The desire to show unity is also related to the war in Ukraine, says German royal family expert and journalist Julia Melchior. "That is also apparent from the program for the coming days." The heads of state visit an arrival center for Ukrainian refugees and a German-British battalion that specializes in building mobile bridges.
Iconic location
The reception for Charles and his wife Camilla is remarkably grand. This afternoon they are greeted at the airport with 21 gun salutes. Once in Berlin, a military tribute follows at the Brandenburger Tor, the iconic gateway to the inner city. This is unique: until now, the reception of guests of honor has always taken place at Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the president.
Queen Elizabeth stood in front of the gate in 1965, during her first visit to Germany after the war, when it was still part of the Wall that separated East and West Berlin. In 1992, after the fall of the Wall, she came back and walked through the gate with her husband Philip. Now Charles and Camilla are received with military honors. Journalist Melchior calls it "a very great symbol of unity".
German love for the royal family
The place also has practical advantages: there is room for more spectators, about 1500 people. The British royal family is popular in Germany. Melchior explains that much of the British royal family tree is in fact German: "Charles has German roots on both his mother's and father's side. He also speaks good German."
It will be heard tomorrow when he is the first monarch to address the Bundestag. His mother wanted to do this in 1992, but according to weekly magazine Der Spiegel, the then Chancellor Kohl personally went for it, because in his eyes the British had inhibited the unification of Germany.
Incidentally, there is also criticism of Charles' speech. "Not chosen, achieved nothing, only born in the 'right' family," Linke parliamentarian Jan Korte wrote on Twitter.
The German press has been under the spell of the state visit for weeks. Weekly magazine Der Spiegel, for example, found documents in the archives with never-before-released details about previous state visits.
For example, the horse-loving Queen Elizabeth 'ordered' two horses during her visit to Bonn in 1978: a brown Holsteiner of 167 to 169 centimeters ("not too light, certainly not too dark") and a gray of 166 to 168 centimeters ("if possible white, at least not dirty gray"). Costs: converted 60,000 euros.
The treasury officials protested, but the Federal President persevered. He wanted to make the visit "as pleasant as possible for both parties".

British King Charles will start his state visit to Germany on Wednesday. Charles and Queen Camilla together visit Berlin and Hamburg. The monarch was supposed to start the visit in France, but that was postponed due to the political unrest in the country.
It is Charles' first state visit as King of the United Kingdom. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier previously called it an "important European gesture" that Charles is traveling to Germany.
On Wednesday evening, Charles and Camilla join a state banquet, where Steinmeier and Charles both give a speech. Charles also visits German soldiers and Ukrainian refugees.
On the third day, the king and queen will be in Hamburg, where, among other things, a wreath will be laid at a monument. Charles then takes a trip on a boat, while Camilla attends a primary school.
Unrest in Germany
Charles was initially supposed to pay a state visit to France from last Sunday to Tuesday.
On Friday it was announced that the British monarch and French President Emmanuel Macron had decided to postpone the visit. The reason for this was the unrest in the country following Macron's controversial pension reform.
It has also been restless in Germany in recent days, due to massive strikes in public transport. Employees are demanding pay rises to compensate for price increases. Due to the strikes, public transport in the country was almost flat.
The first portrait of Charles as king was also unveiled on Wednesday. In the oil painting, created by artist Alastair Barford (35), the British monarch wears a blue suit, white shirt and pink tie. Barford worked on the painting for two weeks. |
