Is it a very frightening or destabilizing event when a PM resigns after a no-confidence vote? Or is it just par for the course in this system of government?
The Swedish political system is quite solid, but this is the first PM to resign due to a confidence vote. His party, the social democrats don’t hold own majority and the current situation arose when a supporting party chose not to go ahead with a new proposition about rent controls on new apartments. It’s inconvenient of course, not least during a pandemic. We have a general election to parliament next autumn. Personally, I think this is mostly a “crisis among politicians” rather than a “political crisis” if that makes any sense.
