Why doesn't Queen Elizabeth abdicate? She's 92, Charles, who has been waiting all his life, may never get to be King at this point. Let the younger generation take over. Follow the example of Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, and Japan, coming up. They still can't let go of the abdication crisis? It was 83 years ago, for heavens sake.
I sax yesterday an article or a video that says that Queen EII is showing signs of dementia and could be forced to abdicate soon. Can't find it now but it would be interesting to post it here. I think such rumours are inevitable, true or not. That still wouldn’t cause an abdication. Not in Britain. We would see another regency period. Not sure if this has appeared in any of the threads - an article over a year old about Charles in almost fully-fledged regent role. QEII has been adamant that it is a job for life, and Charles would not want to become King in that manner. I don't think it would be good for Charles or the country. QEII is already pulling back and letting Charles do more and I believe that will continue and increase. I think we'll see the regency period, without it being called a regency, if you get my drift. |

I agree. I think the media would freak OMG A REGENCY! There would be a lot of attention that I think they would prefer to not have until the Queen actually passes. Her health would have to decline dramatically and for an extended period of time before I think anything official would be declared. |

IMO BRC and Britain will simply go on with business as usual:
QEII's engagements will become fewer and far between, Charles, William and spouses will take over more and more.
Sure there is still the standing date with the PM and I wonder if a specific requirement is necessary for the Prince of Wales to attend with or instead of the Queen. But tbf, everything else is primarily pomp and circumstance and not required for Britain's daily life.
And rumours of Dementia, Alzheimers or (very insulting, imo) a body-double to prevent the public from noticing that the Queen is already on greener pastures or a screaming lunatic, have always been circulated with almost every Monarch and a few politicians.
The idea behind is quite realistic to imagine, so of course conspiracy theories are hatched. IMO as I said above, there is no reason for any conspiracy or hiding of reality, so why even bother...

I don’t think any of the current old guard will abdicate. QEII and QM of Denmark have both said they won’t abdicate. CG of Sweden will never abdicate IMO. I think he would prefer to be dead than see Victoria crowned monarch over CP. He’ll stick it out until the end. King Harald is a wild card. I could have seen him abidcating in the past but I think with MM illness he’ll stay on the throne now. The other big monarchies have relatively young Kings & Queen’s. Until the older generation passes I think we’ll be maintaining status quo for a few years.

I think the Windsors will take up much more workload with the Queen just carrying out a few unavoidable duties and some light public engagements and private outings now and then -as it has been happening in recent years. Each season at the corresponding palace and a pace of life according to her condition. Plenty of royals to share responsibility.

I can see Henri staying in his role for a number of years. He appears to be in good health and is early 60's. Gui seems a long way off being ready.... I think Henri has a good ten years left in him to rule, and MT seems to enjoy being grand duchess. Of all the royal houses, they seem to have the weakest succession plan. I'd put an outside bet on C-G stepping down in the next few years. A gut feeling rather than anything informed! |
